Zilxi, 1.5% Topical Minocycline Foam has been approved for the treatment of the papules and pustules of rosacea in adults.

From the Press Release “ZILXI (minocycline) topical foam, 1.5% is a topical form of the antibiotic minocycline for the treatment of adults with pimples and bumps caused by a condition called rosacea. ZILXI is available by prescription only”. It should be possible to be prescribed Zilxi by the end of this year.

Why is Zilxi better than Soolantra, Finacea or Metrogel?

A true comparison between the (now) 4 FDA approved topical treatments for rosacea unfortunately remains unknown. Of the 4, Zilxi is the only topical antibiotic. Metrogel is officially anti-protozoal/ antibacterial, Finacea has anti-inflammatory effects and Soolantra is known to eradicate demodex mites.

If you cannot take systemic antibiotics then Zilxi might be an option for you.

In clinical trials Zilxi was able to outperform the vehicle in both reducing the amount of rosacea lesions after 12 weeks and also the in overall appearance of trial participants. After 52 weeks of use the recorded side effects were the same as after 12 weeks.

Who should not use Zilxi?

Firstly if you are allergic to tetracyclines then you should not try Zilxi. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have kidney or liver problems then do not use Zilxi. The full list of contraindications and known side effects of minocycline is available in the Zilxi PI.

The most common side effect reported during the clinical trials of Zilxi was diarrhea.

How often do I apply Zilxi?

From the Zilxi PI

After shaking the can well, a small amount of topical foam (e.g. a cherry-sized amount) should be expressed from the can onto the fingertips of the hand and then applied as a thin layer over all areas of the face.

Additional ZILXI foam may be used as needed to ensure the entire face is treated.

The topical foam should be applied at approximately the same time each day at least 1 hour before bedtime.

The patient should not bathe, shower or swim for at least 1 hour after application of the product.

Zilxi is available in a 30gm can.

Can you post a review for the similar foam, Amzeeq? Any idea if the research is similar for this topical as well?
