Vbeam(TM) Industry’s First Affordable Pulsed Dye Laser For Purpura-Free Treatment of Vascular Lesions
WAYLAND, Mass. Feb. 29, 2000– –GentleLASE® Plus Increases Speed in Removal of Unwanted Hair and Offers Effective Treatment of Large Leg Veins
Candela Corporation (NASDAQ: CLZR – news), a leading developer of aesthetic laser systems, today announced it will introduce the new Vbeam laser system at the 58th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) in San Francisco, March 10-15, 2000.
Vbeam, Candela’s innovative laser system, represents a new standard of care for treating vascular lesions. It enables physicians to treat a wide variety of vascular lesions without the problematic side effects of purpura, commonly seen with earlier versions of the pulsed dye laser. Vbeam has the capability to treat leg veins, facial spider veins, rosacea, scars, warts and stretch marks as well as more advanced lesions such as debilitating port wine stains and hemangiomas.
Design and engineering advances enable Vbeam’s purchase price to be a fraction of competing laser systems. The laser system comes with a revolutionary 3-year, full-service warranty that includes maintenance and consumables.
Vbeam features ultra-long laser pulse duration, up to 40 times longer than current technologies, to produce a more gentle heating effect of the targeted blood vessels. This ultra-long pulse enables more uniform coagulation of the vessels, resulting in less post-operative purpura, or laser-induced bruising. Vbeam also incorporates Candela’s patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD)(TM), which sprays the upper layers of skin with a burst of cryogen prior to the laser pulse to increase patient comfort during treatment.
Vbeam received its 510K approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in February 2000.
GentleLASE Plus Removes Hair Faster and Treats Leg Veins
Candela will also demonstrate GentleLASE Plus, the most advanced version of its long pulse, alexandrite laser designed for the removal of unwanted hair and large leg veins. Proprietary technology featured in GentleLASE Plus enables physicians to remove hair from many areas, including the back, chest and legs, in one hour or less. The laser system’s new 18mm spot size offers a 44% increase in coverage area over previously available spot sizes. A unique elliptical handpiece is also available to facilitate treatment of linear lesions such as leg veins.
In addition to improvements in speed and control, GentleLASE Plus also features Candela’s proprietary Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD). DCD enables the physician to deliver a cryogen spray just before the laser pulse for increased patient comfort and satisfaction with treatment. Improved DCD technology enables the user to control the cryogen spray and delay for optimum patient comfort.
The GentleLASE Plus and the Vbeam laser systems together enable physicians to offer a full complement of laser treatments for all their patients interested in aesthetic laser services.
Candela will also exhibit GentlePeel(TM), its microdermabrasion system designed for practitioners with patients who care about their appearance but have concerns about recovery time from more invasive procedures. Dermatologists use GentlePeel for numerous clinical procedures including general dermabrasion, blending scars and other imperfections such as acne scar revision and skin exfoliation.
According to Gerard E. Puorro, Candela’s president and chief executive officer, over 8,000 dermatologists from around the world will have their first opportunity to see the company’s latest offering of aesthetic laser systems. “Every year, the dermatology community anticipates new and exciting products from Candela at AAD. Given our latest innovations and price/performance breakthroughs, we anticipate significant interest in our Vbeam and GentleLASE Plus offerings,” he said.
