Snail slime and bee glue – say what?

Just when you thought you had heard all of the crazy treatments out there for rosacea along comes another one – snail slime! Incredibly, yes. A patent application has surfaced that proposes to treat, and indeed cure rosacea – that contains snail slime, herbal tea and bee glue.

What is Helix aspersa müller?

The genus Cornu is now the accepted way of classifying what was called the common garden snail Helix aspersa. So Helix aspersa is just the scientific name for garden snail.

There is some studies that show that snail slime extracts afe and effective alternative treatment in open wound management of partial thickness burns in adults [ref].

What is Propolis?

Propolis or bee glue is a resinous mixture that honey bees produce by mixing saliva and beeswax [ref]. Bees use it to join together the parts that make their hive.

Pharmaceutical composition for preventing, treating and curing rosacea, comprising snail slime, camomile and propolis

The invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition consisting of

  • snail slime Helix aspersa müller (Cryptomphalus aspersus) (20% to 50%),
  • camomile extract (1-4%),
  • propolis (1-4%), and
  • pharmaceutically acceptable excipients and/or additives for forming a formulation of low, intermediate or high viscosity (10 to 1000 Pa-s).

Said composition is in the form of a lotion, soap, cream or gel, which is embedded in a gauze-type fabric in the form of a plaster that can be applied to lesions caused by the different types of rosacea.

The composition can also contain natural extracts such as marigold extract, honey and vegetable oils.

The invention also relates to the method for producing the composition and to the use thereof for preparing a medicament or device for preventing, treating or curing lesions caused by rosacea, on the skin of the face or the body.

    “You might send out a warning to anyone willing to consider the snail slime idea. Snail slime can contain rat long worm and is not advisable to put on your face. While it’s only been found in specific areas in the US including Hawaii and a few other states it doesn’t seem like a wise idea. It is a malady that has taken lives. Thought you would want the heads up as you try to bring relief to people.”
