The choice of facial cleanser is an important consideration as adjunctive to the treatment of patients with sensitive skin. The maintenance of protective lipids is essential for patients with dermatologic conditions that present with barriercompromised skin, while effective cleansing is nevertheless a desirable benefit for these consumers. We report the selective cleansing of a gentle foaming cleanser by preferential removal of sebaceous lipids and surface impurities over intercellular barrier lipids. The mildness of this gentle foaming cleanser is further evidenced by its tolerability found among sensitive skin subjects, including patients with atopic dermatitis and rosacea. Subjects gave the cleanser high ratings for both cleansing and mildness benefits. Furthermore, the foaming cleanser was found to be as mild as a dermatologist-recommended, nonfoaming gentle cleanser and preferred for cleansing performance.
