I thought I’d let you all know that for the last 12-18 months I have been treating my Rosacea very vigorously. I have only had it for say 2 years total.  I am now just about ready to get on with my life, so I may not be on the board very often anymore, so i wanted to write a detailed message as to what has restored my skin and basically reversed my Rosacea, and made it so I can even go out in this 105 degree sun of arizona and look like everyone else…

Be aware my situation wasnt that simple though it wasnt just Rosacea!!  it was autonomic nervous system involvement, overactive sympathetic nerves, increased adrenaline from my Anxiety disorders from the rosacea when i developed erythrophobia.

I am only 21, will be 22 in may.. I had dropped out of college and have re-enrolled and plan on being in school end of this summer and back for the fall semester.. I have worked very hard PSYCHOLOGICally as this disease can affect you extremely not just physically…

these anxiety disorders caused major adrenaline outflow.. I have been battling this to this day safely and simply with Tenex (comparabale to the popular Clonidine), and Clonazepam (Klonopin)… I take it at bed.. I also use Atenolol (beta blocker) as needed on days of big meeting, oral speeches, or family gatherings etc… This is only cause that adrenaline caused a major flush… so if you have neural mediated flushing too this must be addressed, they told me I had a new disorder called Body Dismorphic Disorder… where you think the flaw is very bad, even though it may be minor, not there, or not seeable to the naked eye of others…  Dont forget the work with the psychiatrist isn’t all peaches and cream, i tried over 12 meds, like paxil, zoloft, prozac, buspar, xanax, serzone, anafranil, risperdal… It takes a while to find the chemistry that works for you, be persistent and patient!!!

I HAD A T2 ETS SURGERY, FOR COLD/CLAMMY HANDS(RAYNAUDS) AND OVERACTIVE SYMPATHETIC NERVES(BLUSHING FACE)…… This was in the winter…

LAST SUMMER I HAD 5 PHOTODERM SESSIONS DONE WITH DR.BITTER SR. IN LOS GATOS, CA… This was of tremendous help… spent the entire summer devoted to that!

And what I have been doing ever since with some pitfalls along the way, is tring many topicals… Thanks to this board I was able to laugh at my derms suggestion of cetaphil cleaning bar with metrocream… I was irritated, dry, red, flaky, burning, etc….  Even an OCULAR component to my Rosacea came on…

I have steadily used this: I cleanse with Zia fresh cleansing gel..

I tried AFE chamomile cleanser but the cetyl alcohol in it got to me…  I also tried A-derma Septalibour’s cleanser and thought it was pathetic, so Zia is the way to go as of now…

I moisturize twice daily while wet, with Dr.sy’s VITA oil(jojoba)…  I had pitfalls with her moisturizing oils(safflower and jojoba), safflower oil made me bright red and broken out… so did pure aloe oil, but aloe vera gel seems ok for me… Keep things simple, less ingredients the better, no fragrances!! I also seemed to become more flushed by using the Emu oil, and couldn’t find a good Chamomile oil so im keeping it simple with just jojoba..

Medication- I use noritate (metronidazole) sometimes during the day, and 2% metronidazole, this must be compounded at bedtime… this brought total clearance of my skin, no bumps in a long , long time…  It wasnt easy, i had allergic reactions to the Rosacea-LTD disks and others, as Im allergic to Sulfur…. so that was a major setback as you can imagine…

Then the Zinc oxide cream has healed my skin tremendously from day #1!! I use it day and night, but i do wash it off before my night dates or dinners.. It protects me from all the elements and sun, heat, wind, etc…  my skin is very thinned!! After a while it blends in beautifully and in time with the Clear version it will only be better for us males, to not look makeupy and be protected all day, we cant stand the uv light on our faces… Dr.Sy’s ZincO is the best!  I had problems until hers came out, i had tried a brand called aloe up of florida, they had one, in a tanned color, way too waxy and greasy..  I tried a pharmacist here in arizona and glen davis in ohio, and those zinc compounds were PATHETIC!!! the ZincO I will not be without, but the clear will be better for men, for everyday use i think, give that time…. For women do not forget a green tinted Neutralizer before the ZincO may be part of your step one process..  It will easily counteract the redness you may have. men it looks ghostly and I dont think we need it, some red in our faces is better than the makeupy look in my opinion…

Thats all TOPICALLY: keys are- 1) CLEANSE gently 2) MOISTURIZE 3) MEDICATE 4) PROTECT and conceal if necessary….

SYSTEMICALLY: very important part as well to protect from collagen breakdown, keep circulation going well, and strengethen blood vessels and capillary walls…

I use:

  1. ESTER-C (like vit.C but better), during photoderm i used 9000mg /day, now I use about 4000… 2) Grape seed extract, goes great with ester c, during photoderm i used 600mg/day, now i use 200mg.. 3) Flax seed Oil 4) Borage oil 5) Evening primrose oil(optional)- helps my hormones and helps my tone down after sexual activity, will help women durng PMS times.. 6) I now use Emu OIL capsules daily-seems to be helping.. I got this from Purple Emu company.. 7) ZINC- I take 60mg daily….  this has resolved my skin dryness, resolved ALL my eye complaints and is just a great regimen… Its great to know there are even more options to fall back on: 1) Antihistamines- I was on zyrtec for over 6 months and it helped get me to where I am now, but after ETS I got off them, and am doinf great without it…  Claritin i tried too… i still take one if Im eating foods high in histamine like tomato sauce or pizza..
  2. Baby Aspirin- I still use one on days that I go out or flaring or when eating niacin, like some cereals have high amounts of niacin, niacinamide is fine…
  3. Ice cubes, yes really after a hot workout I sometimes put ice cubes, and rub them on my face, it will make you look more red for a minute or 2 but in 5-10 minutes youll feel coolled, soothed and non flared…
  4. I sometimes brew chamomile tea bags in a pot and put it into a mug like your going to drink it.. drinking it is good too by the way.  then i put it in the refridgerator, for hours.. I either dip a cloth in and dap it on my face to soothe it or put it in a spray bottle and add some cold water, and if at the gym or very hot one day I spritz myself with this chamomile mist and it is there as an anti-inflammatory just in case…

Oh yeah i also have seborrheic dermatitis (seb.derm).. I reacted to the sulfur in noritate. I also got irritated by Nizoral cream (ketoconazole) in noritate. So just this week i had 1%zinc pyrithione compounded into the noritate and used the last 4 days before bed and it is clearing my seb derm even though it seems the ZincO causes seb derm around my nose folds…

that’s about it. I have even gotten myself so not flared and flushed, that I have been using sunless tanners on my face.. I cannot tan naturally anymore in the sun or tanning beds on my face, the skin is too thin there, so the sunless tanners help a great deal when i get too pale etc…

I highly recommend the New au courant bronzed face gel in clear when it comes out next month.. You may like to try Estee lauder’s sunless supertan for face in medium until then… stay away from alpha hydroxy acids, in these products…

Even last night i went to a tanning salon, not recommended, but I have a huge affair in mid may, besides my birthday, I also have a wedding and 2 graduations to go to,sunless tanning was bad and uneven on my body. and I never went in the sun as you know.. So last night i went to the tanning( I mean I will be seeing like all my old high school friends like a reunion so i have too) bed, and covered my face 1st with a cold wet towel… of course over the goggles.. then another white towel, dry. and another..  then i brought a black shirt of mine, put it over my face I had no idea I was in a tanning bed, it covered my face 100%, no flaring at all, no UV..  I allowed it to hit my neck the best i could and of course my body loved it… I do not recommend this to anyone though! use sunless tanners…

I hope I have been of help.

I wonder how have you been, and how is your rosacea management. Have you tried new drugs? Please let me know.

Hi, thanks for this post. I know it’s been a long time. I’ve been searching for info on Rosacea treatments and have had a lot of success with essential oils only but needed to find out more about jojoba oil. I see that you used that. I was using coconut oil as my base with the essential oils and I think that’s my problem. So, jojoba it is. By the way, you can buy jojoba oil at Trader Joe’s and mix it with the essential oils needed for your skin. That’s what I did and it totally worked.
