A local angle for an Australian commercial producer of East Indian Sandalwood Oil.
West Australian based TFS is touting its supply of East Indian Sandalwood Oil to Galderma for use in the just released over the counter Benzac Acne Solutions product.
TFS is said to be the world’s only supplier of pharmaceutical-grade sandalwood oil, and supplies it to Galderma for $US4500/kg ($AU4820/kg).
Benzac Acne Solutions is an over the counter product and is quite different to the similarly named Benzac AC.
Whilst targetted at acne, Benzac Acne Solutions may be a good choice for rosacea sufferers with a strong papule and pustule presentation of their rosacea. If rosacea sufferers can tolerate Salicylic Acid then this over the counter product is worth a try.
Please do tell us if you try it and like it.
Why More OTC Treatments?
We know that Galderma is seeking to increase profits by expanding their over the counter brands.
Galderma believes that prescription research and development is risky so over the counter products, and especially strongly branded, high margin products, are an attractive path to reliable profits.
Launch Publicity
Benzac Acne Solutions has recently been released and here is some of the publicity around the launch.
Coming Soon: Galderma’s OTC Benzac Acne Solutions
The three-step regimen includes a foaming cleanser, spot treatment, and blemish-clearing hydrator.
Among the key ingredients are salicylic acid to unclog pores, zinc and extracts from honeysuckle and kakadu plum to improve skin tone and texture, and East Indian Sandalwood Oil. The latter is extremely rare and possesses potent anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It is derived from trees in an East Indian sandalwood plantation in Northern Australia, where trees are continuously replanted to preserve and grow the once dwindling population. Benzac is the only product to contain this oil.
“It’s used to treat mild-to-moderate acne. There was a very low incidence of side effects, and the key ingredient is from a sustainable source,” says Jeanine Downie, MD, a dermatologist in Montclair, NJ, during a media event in New York City.
Another selling point: it’s vegan. Downie says, “I think it’s going to be groundbreaking.”

Benzac treats stubborn acne and prevents new breakouts from forming with salicylic acid, while pharmaceutical-grade East Indian Sandalwood Oil calms and soothes the skin.
In a clinical study, 91% of people saw improvement in their acne in two weeks when using the new 3-step Benzac Acne Solutions, which includes the
- Benzac Skin Balancing Foaming Cleanser,

- Benzac Blemish Clearing Hydrator.
“Benzac is also the only skincare line to use East Indian Sandalwood Oil, which has been used for thousands of years in Eastern medicine and is known to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and soothes the skin.”
“Unlike many other acne treatments that don’t live up to their claims, Benzac is game changing in that it is clinically proven to help acne sufferers see predictable, smooth and luminous skin while minimizing irritation,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jeanine Downie. “Benzac is also the only skincare line to use East Indian Sandalwood Oil, which has been used for thousands of years in Eastern medicine and is known to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and soothes the skin.”
Warning on Sandalwood Oil
Paula Begoun warns;
Fragrant oil that can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions (Source: American Journal of Contact Dermatitis, June 1996, pages 77–83).
There is one animal study showing it to have antitumor properties (Source: European Journal of Cancer Prevention, October 1999, pages 449–455).
It is a must to avoid if you have extra-sensitive skin or normally react to fragrance.
It may be worth using caution until you are sure that any of the ingredients in Benzac Acne Solutions might be too harsh for your rosacea skin.

Does anyone know if this product smells strongly of Sandalwood? I hate the smell of Sandalwood but like the idea of an essential oil in facial products.
I had heard from a friend that Frankincense is effective for rosacea but haven’t done any research on it. Has anyone heard of Frankincense being effective?
It doesn’t smell of anything, barely at all. I’m a blogger to had early access to the product; it’s quite nice and not overly smelly (I love sandalwood so I was disappointed it didn’t have more of a scent!)
