Over the Counter Substitute for METRONIDAZOLE cream?

Postby sstatler » Wed May 06, 2009 4:58 am

Ive finally found something that works and guess what....Im going to have about a 6 month period or so where I wont have insurance...and I wont be able to afford an expensive doc visit to renew my cream. Since using it, I can sit below the fan at my desk (which is unavoidable)...and not feel like my face is burning all day long....it works and I can even sleep on my cheek without waking up in the morning and not being able to get rid of the hot feeling.........I finally can sleep on my side!! You have no idea how amazing that is...well maybe you all do lol :).....

Anyways, I finally found a routine that works for me....

Morning
Wash face with water
Wash eyelashes with Hot Washcloth and water/sometimes salt water
Use Eucerin lotion for moisturizer
Apply high spf sunblock...twice...lol...
then Maybelline Mineral Powder Makeup, also with SPF...

Night
Wash face with Cetaphil
Use Apple Cider Vinegar/Water solution for "toner" and to get off excess Makeup
Rinse Apple Cider Vinegar Off
Apply 10% Vit C Solution (for repair only, cant seem to be able to use it in the morning without my skin freaking out, but I heard it was okay to use at night if you needed skin repair which with my face, it looks like the veins definately need repair lol---maybe this doesnt help at all if you have knowledge of this that contradicts this lemme know)
Let the Vit C Dry for 20-40 minutes
Apply Metronidazole Cream
Apply Equate Vaseline (Essentially Vit E and Aloe mixture)

This routine has been really helping my face. I wouldnt say its perfect but I can sleep on my cheeks, they still are red if I do in the morning but the hotness has toned down, the burning is gone......

What am I going to do...is there anything that would substitute this for long periods???

Or..I have even been thinking so desperately about...buying from an online pharmacy and trying my luck with something like that LOL....I cannot go back to feeling like I have a 3rd degree burn on my face and one side red during the day, the other fine and then that symptom switching cheeks LOL...

Please help with suggestions !! The rest of my routine can of course continue, it seems like i have a simple way to deal with my Rosacea compared to others.......

I don't think there is an OTC equivalent of Metrocream/gel, etc.

This cream (chinese) claims to contain 3% metronidazole, but it also has herbs, etc. that could irritate the skin.

Can your doctor just write you a prescription for 3 tubes or even 1 tube now, before the insurance runs out? My doctor writes me for 3 tubes, for which I only pay $5 since it's "one" prescription. And my best friend, who didn't have insurance for years, paid only $50 per tube, I think. It does last a long time, since you don't need to slather it on generously.

I have never heard of an over the counter equivalent for metrogel, sorry.

This would be unlikely as the active ingredient metronidazole is a prescription drug with side effects etc. so it would only be sold with a script.

It is possible that some countries sell metronidazole products without a script, but that would be risky I would have thought.

Some counties do make finacea available over the counter, though.

Also, Galderma do offer Free Metrogel and Oracea for those on a very low income and no insurance.

Finally, there is a page of Favourite Over the Counter Treatments for Rosacea.

all the best,

on the Demodex Solutions website they have a product with 3% metronidazole in it. This is much stronger than the usual metrocream. You can order it from the website.

Ill look into this. Sounds like something I may be interested in. A ton cheaper than metrogel/metrocream for me.

Try proskin rosacea. Completely healed my rosacea. Left with slight scarring but that seems to be smoothing out the more I apply this cream. Don't be out off by the price - it is a quality product that lasts around four to six months.
