Hi all,
I joined this support group after struggling to suffer in silence. I would love any advice people can give, or even just to know there are people out there who understand.
I started to get flushing and redness on my nose after I had a rhinoplasty last July. I would go red after washing my face, getting out the shower, having sex, things like that. However it only got worse this year, with the appearance of red blotches and lots of bumps all over my face. My GP said it could be rosacea when I saw him back in Feb and then when I started seeing a private dermatologist in May, she agreed. It has weeks it's better than others, but the past month it is the worst it has ever been (by far). It's sore/itchy all the time, lumpy and blotchy. Every morning I wake up praying I'll look like how I used to.... I don't know how long this awful flare up will last.
What I currently do to treat rosacea:
1. I was taking doxycycline for 6 months but recently stopped because it had made no difference, just irritated my bowels
2. Follow a skin care regime every morning and night outlined by my dermatologist: includes skin ceuticals' phytocorrective products and redness neutraliser, a vitamin c serum and a tinted SPF50.
3. Dermalux LED light treatment: had 4 out of 10 sessions of intense blue light treatment in the past month, but haven't noticed an improvement yet.
4. Cut out dairy products 3 weeks ago but haven't noticed any difference. Considering trying gluten instead.
5. My doctor also put me on anti anxiety medication recently because I suffer with bad panic attacks, and she suggested a reduction in my stress may positively influence my rosacea
I have read a lot about metrogel and my dermatologist has mentioned it a few times, but I'm so scared and reluctant to try it because my skin is insanely sensitive and I've heard it can get a lot worse before it gets better. I'm suffering with very bad anxiety and depression, and I feel like if my skin got worse it might push me over the edge. However I'm terrified because im only 23 and I keep reading that rosacea just continues to get worse without 'proper treatment', but I don't know what this proper treatment is!! Everyone says different...
Do you think my skin will ever calm down and go back to how it used to be?
I've stopped seeing my boyfriend because I can't cope with anyone seeing me without make up on, I've cancelled holidays because I'm scared the heat will make it worse. I just don't know what to do :(

Know this is an old post, but hope you see my response anyway.
I started having issues with my nose after rhynoplasty, too. I had surgery a couple years ago to correct a bad nose job I got in my early 20s, and since then, my nose flushes and I wake up to a swollen nose every morning. (To be clear, I had rosacea well before surgery, but the nose issues started after).
Basically, the surgery broke a lot of blood vessels, and broken blood vessels are leaky and cause redness and edema (swelling). I went back and talked to the surgeon, and he said after two years, the swelling can't be from surgery and is likely due to my skin type (rosacea).
Things have improved since I've been recieving Vbeam nasal treatments from a cosmetic dermatologist. I've been getting them for about a year now, and my broken capillaries have been very stubborn--I don't even bruise at higher laser settings. But the good news is that I rarely flush during the day now, my nose isn't nearly as red when I wake up, and it only takes a couple hours for the morning swelling to subside. If I feel a flare coming on during the day, I take Advil and an oral nasal decongestant to stop it. This doesn't work for nighttime swelling because that's due to laying down for 8 hours, which is mostly unavoidable, so I prop my head up to reduce it. I also make sure any sinus/allergy issues are under control because the swelling/pressure is a trigger.
Prescription topical treatments always irritate my skin, so I just stick to a gentle skin routine. The less irritation, the better.
I know it's frustrating and can hurt your confidence, but please go out and live your life! Anyone who loves you isn't going to care. My husband could care less and says I make it out to be worse than what it is. I always tell myself: No one will care about it as much as I do, because it's happening to me. I hope my experience helps you!
