Potential Irritant: Bismuth Oxychloride in Mineral Makeup

Hi,

I have to agree on Everyday Minerals. I ordered their little free sample kit; it's fantastic! Now, the concealer doesn't cover 100% (what really does?), but it covers very, very well; it actually covers as well as, if not better than, my former sort of heavy concealer by Amazing cosmetics, while looking and feeling much more natural and soft. The website says you can use it wet, too, which I haven't tried.

I also ordered the foundation in the "intensive" formula, which I swept over my entire face and my concealer-covered cheeks; wonderful!

I do recommend ordering one of their very affordable brushes with your sample kit; they're nicer than the Bare Minerals brushes I have been using. Softer.

I just checked the Jane Iredale site for the ingredients in the Amazing Base and the Pure Pressed. The ingredients for both of these products do not list Bismuth Oxychloride. Does anyone have further info on this. Is it possible that Jane Iredale removed the bismuth oxychloride out of the Amazing Base and Pure Pressed powder foundation?

The original post in this thread is dated Oct 2007, so it's certainly possible that the Jane Iredale makeups have been reformulated since then. I looked at the ingredient lists for the two products you mentioned and I don't see bismuth listed in either one.

I did notice that both products include non-mineral ingredients. That's not always a bad thing, but I would caution that, as with any other product being tried for the first time, you do a spot test first to make sure that no ingredients disagree with your skin.

I suppose I want to touch on the topic of Bismuth Oxychloride because I am particularly sensitive to it and I have heard so many stories from other rosaceans who are sensitive to it too. All people have their own chemical makeup, and some will have problems while others won't. However IMHO, I would avoid it where possible.

Tim Casper, from Emani Minerals has been in contact to say that Emani does not contain Bismuth Oxychloride.

There is mica in bareface minerals, I cannot find a makeup that has no bismuth oxycloride, carmine or mica...can anyone help??

There might be a mineral make-up without mica, bismuth oxychloride or carmine, but I don't happen to know of one.

If no one offers a product name, here are two suggestions:

- pose your question at a make-up site like < http://www.makeupalley.com/ >

- consider mixing up your own mineral powder using one of the many recipes on the internet, eg: http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Mineral-Makeup/

- browse any of the sites that sell ingredients directly to the customer, eg: http://www.makingcosmetics.com/ (Amazing to see how cheap things like niacinamide are - $2.85 for 30g, $5.15 for 60 g, etc.)
