IPL for ocular rosacea

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It is the general term for a variety of treatments that use a mixture of light frequencies. One example machine is the Lumenis One.

IPL for ocular rosacea

Post by evol »

Hi all,

I've been suffering from ocular rosacea/blepharitis for about five years (coincidentally—or not—starting just after I finished a round of Accutane), and after exhausting seemingly all other treatments (lid scrubs, low-dose doxy, Xiidra, Azasite...) I'm considering IPL. I admit I have trouble trusting my optometrist when she says it's safe—especially when I have to sign a waiver to get treatment; and normally I would not consider even a slight risk to my vision for a mostly cosmetic issue. But as fellow sufferers know, the effect on your self-esteem, identity, and quality of life can be devastating, and I am desperate enough to at least explore the option.

I would love to hear the experiences of anyone who has had IPL specifically for ocular rosacea. I have actually had one treatment myself, about a year ago, with no discernible effect, but didn't go through with the rest of the series out of fear. I've heard that the danger lies more with iterative procedures, as they don't give your cells time to heal. Would treatments spaced out by a year have any effect, or do they need to be closer together?

I also read somewhere that the newest IPL machines are less likely to cause adverse effects. Does anybody know where I could find one? Or a good eye doctor in NYS who is very experienced in IPL?

Finally, has anyone seen an improvement in their ocular rosacea using LLLT? Is LLLT safer than IPL, or is there still a risk? Has anyone found anything else that helps? I've found zinc sunscreen calming for rosacea in general, so I bought some pure zinc oxide powder to try on my eyes.

Never give up, never give up! Thanks so much for any advice or support.
