67th AAD Meeting SFO, rosacea highlights

The 67th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology is due to meet this week in San Francisco. I have to say that the AM09 Program looks a little uninteresting for those following rosacea developments.

The program contains a few advertisements from Finacea, the new Instant Relief Mineral Powder from the Clinique Redness Solutions range and also Aczone (Topical dapsone gel 5%). Aczone is being promoted as the first new molecule for acne treatment in a decade.

I received a PR email saying that Pyratine XR is launching (again) at this meeting, but I didn’t find that it the program as such. Senetek are pretty good at PR so there are plenty of announcements around for this product. For those not familiar with Pyratine XR ;

Pyratine XR Press Release

Based on positive results demonstrated in previous studies of Pyratine-6™ (0.1% furfuryl tetrahydropyranyladenine) for the remediation of photodamaged skin and erythema, with resulting reduction in facial redness and fine wrinkles in as early as two weeks, Senetek initiated a clinical trial for assessing the effects of Pyratine-XR™ (0.125% furfuryl tetrahydropyranyladenine) in improving the clinical signs and symptoms of rosacea.

These two Poster Exhibits are potentially the most interesting bits for rosacea sufferers.

  • P729: Clinical evaluation of human embryonic stem cell for treating rosacea: An open study
  • P731: An evaluation of the acceptance of metronidazole gel, 1% when used with facial cosmetics in rosacea patients

Some Focus Sessions and Symposia

  • U057 Nanotechnology: Nanotechnology is a burgeoning field with tremendous promise for dermatology. It capitalizes on the unique properties of matter at a very tiny scale. For example, normally opaque and greasy sunscreens vanish and have an elegant feel when their components are broken down into nanoparticles. However, many in vitro and in vivo studies show that nanomaterials penetrate skin and can be toxic. Many nano cosmeceuticals are specifically marketed to women of childbearing potential or to patients with seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, or acne. This talk serves to educate the audience about the benefits and hazards of this new and exciting horizon in dermatology.
  • S048 Acne and Rosacea: This symposium will cover the latest information on acne and rosacea, focusing on pathogenesis and treatment. Major advances in both basic and clinical research will be presented. Novel treatment options that have become available recently and others on the horizon will be discussed.  Microbes in Acne and Rosacea, Why They Matter, Dr.Webster. New Discoveries into Pathogenesis of Rosacea and Approaches to Treatment, Dr. Maier. A New Look at the Role of Diet in Acne and Rosacea, Dr. Leyden. Lasers, Lights and Other Devices for Acne and Rosacea,  Dr.Tanghetti
  • P706: Acne improves with a popular, low glycemic diet from South Beach.
  • P737: Blue light therapy as self-care in the treatment of mild to moderate acne

If I find any more details on these poster sessions I’ll post them here.

  1. Dave,
    Thanks for the synopsis of the convention. When was the last time physicians ever mentioned at an AAD Convention “A New Look at the Role of Diet in Acne and Rosacea” and how “Acne improves with a popular, low glycemic diet from South Beach?” In the past, very little has ever been mentioned about the role diet plays in rosacea. Uninteresting to some, I am sure. But as you know, some rosaceans find the topic of interest and keep asking diet trigger questions all over your board including a category you created for the subject. Amazing to me that physicians are considering the topic now and I am grateful for it.
