My daily rosacea-beating regime has changed over the years. I have gotten it down to the simplest and most elegant combination that I can. Everyone wants to find their ideal rosacea treatment.
Remembering that everyone is different, I hope the following might prove useful.
My main rosacea symptom was my constantly red nose. I was a rudolph for at least 15 years. Even while I was using Rozex Gel and on antibiotics (Bactrim and Doryx mostly) I was unsatisfied with my rosacea treatments. I have also uploaded some photos of a rosacea flareup that set me back. By this stage my rosacea was already 80% better. Like most people I don’t have photos of when my rosacea was at its worst. You can also find an old photo on the profiles page.
Now I very rarely have pustules or papules and can sometimes even think about going without my tinted sunscreen.
Morning
Wash with Galderma’s Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. This is a low lather cleanser, very gentle. It might not remove the strongest of grime though.
Moisturise nose and cheeks with Galderma’s Cetaphil Moisturising Lotion.
Apply Rosacea Care’s (formerly Linda Sy’s) `Tinted ZincO Cream SPF 20‘. Tinted ZincO’s colouring is very good for me. Reapply in the afternoon if required.
Shaving
I used to use the Panasonic Wet/Dry Electric Razor and blades have once every 10 days or so with a lubricated twin razor to discourage ingrown hairs.
Previously my face is was too sensitive to shave with a blade everyday, but using Dermalogica Close Shave Oil has really helped me shave with a blade again. This is a very slippery oil, along with a lubricated twin razor (Gillette II Plus Pivot) has basically eliminated nicks and greatly reduced irritation and razor burn.
Sunscreens
The wonderful `Tinted ZincO Cream SPF20‘ is my daily sunscreen. For me using a sunscreen every single day is important. This is another gem that took me a few years to learn.
- micronized zinc oxide dimethicone a safe sunscreen
- nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide being watched
Previous Regimes
Previous daily regimes have included the following products.
Rosacea-LTD
I have used these `disks’ for several years, both the brown and yellow as directed. The papules and pustules have now almost totally gone so I no longer need to use these.
Linda Sy Cleansing Bar for Dry Skin
This is a regular looking soap that has a creamy lather. For those looking for a regular soap styled cleanser this is worth a try. It cleanses as well as any I have tried. If you are going to use a moisturiser or jojoba oil after cleansing then any drying effects will be negated.
- Linda Sy: Cleansing Bar for Dry Skin. Sadly this product is no longer available.
Linda Sy Vita-Oil
I would never have believed that gentle cleansing, moisturising and protecting my skin would sort out my rosacea. This light oil is great for the whole face. Perfect for underneath the ZincO. A guy espousing the merits of moisturising – you read it first here !
- See also:jojoba oil has anti-inflammatory properties
- Rosacea Care: Linda Sy is no longer in operation but you can now buy Vita-Oil from RosaceaCare.
Linda Sy Acne Cover Lotion
Was a wonderful boost for my self esteem to be able to hide my red nose for the first time in more than 10 years. Quite a thick colouring especially for the nose, you need to apply it just right to get a natural look – i.e. don’t put too much on. I feel that it was part of the calming and protecting my skin regime. Sadly this product is no longer available.
- Linda Sy: Acne Cover Lotion
Doxycycline
I have taken antibiotics for 6-7 years on and off. Antibiotics were important while I was getting my skin under control. The dosage varied between 50mg and 100mg a day. I tapered down to 50mg every second day when I felt that I could come off them. Years ago when I had teenage acne, I took Bactrim for a while. Since being diagnosed with rosacea I was on doxycycline (doryx) for an extended period.
Rozex Gel
Also known as Metrogel, this is the bog standard rosacea treatment that will probably be offered to you first off. I was always disappointed with how effective this was. It was giving me some relief from redness and probably cut down the pustules a little. I would still get new pustules every night even when on Doxycycline and Rozex. Stopped using it as it just wasn’t a good enough solution. In fact I started the rosacea-support email group because I wanted to find better treatments.
Laser Treatment
Several years ago I had 2 Pulse Dye Laser treatments of my nose. These left black crusty scabs that eventually healed. The treatment was painful. I would not recommend this as a rosacea treatment. I was disappointed to see that I had pustules return even while the skin was healing.
- pain, swelling and redness after pulse dye laser treatments
- pulsed dye laser and papulopustular rosacea
- pulse dye laser improves erythema

Does anyone here experience swelling with their rosacea? I was diagnosed with rosacea about a year ago after getting a big growth on my eyelid. I stopped using the metrogel and doryx after a while, but this winter I had shingles, and ever since then I have been getting pustules as well as weird areas of swelling, mostly around my eyes and mouth. The pustules and swelling both will come on suddenly and will then go away after a few hours. Seems very weird. I have gone back on the doryx and metrogel btw. Thanks for any insights!
Just part of the fun my dear. As my rosacea progressed I got more and more pustules and swelling (inflammation)- around the nose is normal too. Anywhere there are a large amount of blood vessels. Sometimes I would have to get injections of cortisone injections into the area to reduce the swelling. Sorry. Good Luck. Try Dr Sebagh Rose de Vie if you can afford it. It really reduced the inflammation in my skin, but really expensive. Also make sure there is not urea (a known irritant) in your face cream.
Thanks for the input! I will try to find a moisturizer/sunscreen without urea – you’re right, the one I am using now does have urea…
I have had the acne that goes with Rosacea and I take 1000-2000mg. of L-Lysine per day. It has really helped with the pustules. I had stopped taking it last year for six months and then had the pustules so bad I didn’t go anywhere without alot of makeup on. I didn’t put two and two together for a while, but then I then remembered I had stopped the Lysine around the same time. I started taking it again and it has gotten so much better.
David,
I read an article about a woman with severe facial flushing/blushing that was affecting her television career as an anchorwoman. She ended up going to Sweden to have a surgery to remove the ability to blush. It’s called E.T.S. or Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy(yes that’s the word they use.) It’s a surgery that only takes about 20 minutes but it actually cuts off the faces ability to flush or blush. Have you heard anything about this surgery in regards to Rosacea? There could be some side effects from it but this woman’s surgery was a success with minimal side effects.
What do you think? It’s a pretty drastic measure I know.
Dani
Hi Dani,
ETS is a drastic option for those who suffer badly. You can find a few articles here from people who have tried it. The surgery is more or less un-reversible so you need to enter it with all possible information about possible complications and side effects etc.
I don’t blush anymore ! ETS and rosacea ETS comments and warnings are worth reading.

I wanted to post that I tried a combo laser of IPL (very light-one pass) and another
laser that had a cool spray with it (Genesis). Unfortunately, it calmed my nose down
for about a week. I only spent a little since my first treatment was advertised as
half price. I will be trying the physician in Tinton Falls, NJ who said he can bill my
insurance. My appointment is June 1st. He does not do the IPL. I have always
suspected any light treatment is not helpful. My infrared piece and red LED piece
have always aggravated it. Meanwhile, I stopped the aspirin since I was getting
too many bruises (thins the blood terribly for me). The bentonite clay didn’t help
much as far as curing inflamation. It looks like I have rhinphyma but it is only puffy
in the morning. I finally soaked my nose with MSM mixed with water today. I am also staying away from excercise until my nose
settles down. I lift weights and it really caused my face to get puffy. -I was puffy all weekend! Wish I had tried the MSM before because at least my nose doesn’t hurt.
Anyone else try the MSM? I also took 2 capsules with lots of water.
Cyndi – I haven’t taken MSM – good luck with that. I also wanted to say I hope you hold off on all these laser treatments – they aren’t going to cure the problem & you might be doing damage to your skin. To get rid of a few broken capillaries after you have cleared up your rosacea is a different story.
Your skin sounds really inflamed, which means your blood and immune system has to be too. Increase your water intake – 15 glasses a day minimun, increase greens in your diet to alkaline your body more – an acidic body is linked to most diseases and problems.
Using facial products that kill bacteria and mites is a must – Prosacea is good, I still am having better results with a mild benzoyl peroxide, sulfur products another must and TTO is really great. I think Dr. Bonner’s tea tree soap is very helpful.
Even for some people that don’t want to change their diet – adding vit’s and herbs that can help heal and clean up your body should be a must also. The skin is always a reflection of what is going on inside your body.
Aspirin sounds like a really bad idea and can give you ulcers. There is also valid research that having bacteria in the stomach (h-pylori) and other intestinal problems will show up as rosacea. I hope you skip the laser and see a regular doctor that can take bloods tests and breath tests to find out what the imbalance is in your system.
Good luck!
Two of my favorite supplements are Chlorella and Alfalfa – try to buy organic. A quick web search should show how excellent they are.
Buy green foods in a jar if you don’t want to change your diet – Vitamineral Green is excellent – needs to be mixed with juice or water.
Organic Aloe Vera is excellent – a teaspoon or tblespoon in water every day – can help reduce inflammation. Might be a lot better for the face too than some things I”ve seen listed.
They use to say what you put on your face you should be able to eat – there’s a lot of truth to that – some of the chemicals especially in prescription medicines are toxic & making problems worse – they are absorbed thru your skin & pollute your system.
I tried organic honey on my face for a quick moisturizing mask – it helps!
Mash a banana & put on your face.
The blood is too acidic – read about “metabolic acidosis”
Hope this helps.
Hi.
I was prescribed tablets called Tetracycline. I take 2 in the morning and 2 before bed. They have cleared my skin of pustules.
Dear sir/madam
I had Rosacea stage 2 for two years and went on courses of antibiotics, dietry change, creams, accupuncha, chineese herbal medsin and even faith healing… to no avale.
My GP, The skin specialists at st Georges & a clinic in Harly street all said, THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE, not even lazer as this can worsten it!
Then I stumbeled apon this> http://www.purpleemu.com/store/arlite.html
PROBLEM SOLVED: This product is “All natural” has “No known side effect” and “Works”
Now I am Rosacea free, I mean my skin is perfect and I mean that, not “BETTER” but “Im cured”
Yes in some cases you might need a top up from time to time, depends, but for me “And I can only voutch for myself” it totaly worked:)
Not sure what you will do with my comment and this email, but if you really want to help people, id surgest making it public on one of your forerooms or advice pages.
This email is NOT good, if you are involved in making money out of this skin dissorder, like skin salons or privert skin buissness as this cream works and will probably put you out of buissness.
The NHS and my GP refuse to entertain my comments, probably because there priority is not to cure but to profite.
Thanks for reading my email and if you are not allowed to take and use All natural remodys for your site, then please recomend this to people, friends and family who have this condition in your spare time, as YOU WILL BE HELPING THEM FROM A LIFE OF TRUMA.
Have a good week.
Regards Mr John Bedford
So has anyone else tried the purpleemu cream? Just wondering if this man John is real…he has a lot misspelled words which isn’t a big deal as long as he’s legit. Please don’t take offense Mr. Bedford, as I’ve seen a lot of emails come in in my email that have a good number of misspelled words and I’ve been told that’s a red flag. Plus, the emu cream is really expensive and I was hoping it wasn’t just a ploy to get you to buy ‘another’ cream. It does have a couple of ingredients in it that are irritations to the skin (i.e. Eucalyptus for one).
What are your thoughts David?
Dani

After reading your post with interest, I decided to change my regime and see if I could tame my face. I’m a female, age 50, but like you, the majority of my flareups were on my nose and a few on my cheeks. It could look, at times, like my nose was a mass of acne. Really stressful.
I first ordered the “mineral disks” from Rosocea Ltd. Expensive, yes, but with the unconditional guarantee, I felt I could roll the dice.
I then purchased a bar of Cetaphil for mild sensitive skin, and, a trial-sample kit from Rosacea Care, which contained both a sample of the Vita Oil and a sample of the Tinted Zinc Sunblock (amongst other things). The sample sizes were quite generous.
To cut to the chase, I’ve been following your regime daily for a month.
I have not one single “blemish” remaining. NOT ONE.
To go from “hamburger nose” to “baby’s bottom soft” in one month makes me shake my head.
The mineral disks made very fast work of the active breakouts on my nose. Those were gone in the first week of twice daily use. Thereafter, I stayed true to your regime of cetaphil-vita-oil-sunblock and I don’t have a single blemish or red spot anywhere on my face.
I have to resist the temptation to constantly reach up and stroke my own cheeks.
I don’t really need the disks on a daily basis, but if I see a tiny spot turn up (say, after I’ve had a cocktail), I’ve used the disk on it and it’s gone by morning.
I realize on the one hand that’s it common sense to say “cleanse, moisturize, protect” and yet we so seldom believe the simple solutions are the best solutions (e.g., to lose weight, eat less and exercise).
It was really a matter of committing to the routine and stopping trying all sorts of product claiming a miracle. The mineral disks, gentle soap, and learning to properly use the Vita Oil, has brought a youthful glow my skin and lifted my spirits.
I can’t thank you enough. I’m so glad I stumbled on your blog post!
Hi,
My rosacea and chelitis went in a week with a very good quality b vitamins(b complex) and good qualith Neem oil. (Everytime I went to the bathroom I put some on after washing my hands so it was easy to remember. I also put some of the neem oil up my nose too, in line with the dermamite theory. And yes the neem oil has a ‘distinct’ smell
I’d had it for months, approx 6 months so pretty cool to see it clear up with something I could get in my local health food shop.
I hope this helps.
Hi Kate,
Great to hear you had some improvements. I think the `disks’ are great for nose lumps and bumps and am happy to hear that you think so too. All the best for continuing improvement.

Hi!
Just wanted to leave a question for Kate (posted 7/12/11) since I have started the Rosacea Disk (almost 2 weeks). I am in my early 50′s. My most serious area of acne outbreaks is on my chin (probably due to scars/oily pockets from inflammation during pregnancy quite a number of years ago). I have oily skin. The question is: Why did you not follow the Rosacea Disk company’s recommendation of using the Neutrogena Bar Soap (cleansing), the Jojoba Oil (moisturing) and Clinique’s City Block Sunscreen (protection)? Was the combination not working for you? I am following their suggestions and my cheeks and nose are not that red now. The bumps on my nose are starting to clear. I have a lot of bumps on my chin and the hot & humid weather seem to trigger more (though with the disk they seem to be getting smaller in size). I am still trying to figure out the right amount of the disk to apply. Thanks for your help.
Simply put, I followed the recommendations of David, the poster, because his symptoms most closely matched my own. I purchased the products he recommended, rather than the products endorsed by the company from which I purchased only one of the products.
In addition, I don’t care overly for the Neutrogena Bar for cleansing. I feel too “taut” albeit it is very gentle. I much, much prefer the gentle Cetaphil bar because it both cleanses and feel a little more soothing to me. Less taut, without being overly moisturized.
The Vita Oil sample I received in the it from Rosacea Care is predominantly Jojoba Oil. It just has few additional enrichments — so that’s nearly an identical swap. I have Jojoba oil already, as well.
Finally, I don’t care for any Clinique products (except for one color of lipstick!). My sister worked as a Clinique rep for many, many years and I have used all of their products for extended periods of time. I never felt any of them were worth another purchase as my skin aged and my rosacea developed. I “got” rosacea, and watched it worsen, all whilst using Clinique. It was time for a change.
By contrast, the Cetaphil and Vita Oil were an instant pleasure, the discs cleared up all bumps and lumps, Rosacea care’s tinted sunblock has not broken me out, is very sheer, can replace my makeup on days I don’t need a fuller coverage look, and is a very light texture which appeals to me.
The 1-2-3 combo worked for David, so I tried it, and it worked for me beautifully.
In fact, regarding the discs, my nose area cleared up so quickly I stopped using the disks within a few weeks. Then, I had a very stressful experience after I felt and broke my foot. I had to get a cast and one day later, my nose was on fire with new bumps. I used the disks a few days and it was back to normal. FAST.
As for quantity, the less I apply, the better it works for me, because if I’ve learned if I apply enough to see or feel or taste salty grit, it’s too much for me. I just dampen the discs under water and just make ONE swipe and that’s all.
Good luck!
Thank you for that comprehensive report and analysis. Neutrogena bar has the same effect on me, and everything I ever tried in Clinque (soaps, lotions, tonics) no matter how “delicate” they were, gave me a proble. I looked on the Rosacea Care site, but I can’t find these “disks” that have been mentioned. Where are you all finding these please?
I found it. Thank you. Too many rosacea sites selling products. rosacea-flushing-ltd
Thanks Kate for your speedy and detailed response. I agree that the Neutrogena transparent bar leaves one’s skin somewhat taut, but since I normally have a very oily surface, the slight dryness is not long lasting. Concerning Clinique, I have been using their products (powder & moisturizer) for quite a while and don’t seem to have a problem with them. The City Block SPF40 leaves my skin kind of shiny looking, but since it is tinted, my skin doesn’t look as red. I think this product works better for me because I need oil-free products. Maybe I’ll try the zinc sunblock from Rosacea Care if the City Block causes my rosacea to worsen. I am concerned about the low SPF of 20 and the product not being oil-free. Thanks again for your help.
Guys just wondered what your thoughts were on Hardness of water and rosacea symptoms. I find that my redness dies down when I’m in a soft water area, unfortunately I’m in a very high hard water area and my skin takes a battering and flares up with eczema mre often
I was visiting Seattle recently and the very soft water (probably cool weather also) was wonderful for my skin. Even though I ate fish & chips as well as other rosacea triggers, I did not experience any flare ups. The hard water does dry out one’s skin more. I live in a hard water area as well and have installed a water softener (I’m not sure you will be able to do the same). Perhaps you can moisturize more and find very gentle products.
Tap water does make a difference, especially for sensitive skin. I’ve traveled to many different cities in different states & the water can make my skin clear up in a day or get worse. It might help to rinse your face with bottled water. There is a ton of junk in our water systems including toxic chlorine to kill some of the bacteria, so that’s why some products that you leave on the face work best because they counteract the crappy water.

I created a Facebook group which is dedicated to the wonderful creams of Purple Emu, there treatments left my skin Rosacea free and I feel the world needs to be told and to stop suffering!

Mr John Bedford
Just throwing out a question for anyone who is using jojoba oil — Is there another way to apply instead of wetting hands, adding a drop of jojoba and blending in one’s palms? I wear contact lens and though I wash my hands before applying, sometimes the jojoba is still there. I can use jojoba after inserting the lens. It’s just that I see better with them. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
I’m sorry that I wrote inserting the lens, I meant to say that I tend to remove the lens after the whole wash, moisturize & Rosacea disk routine.
Ashley, would it help to spray? You could try getting a microspray bottle, something from a mister you already have, add water and a few drops of Jojoba, shake, and spray. It would be harder to concentrate it away from your eyes, but would keep it off your fingers and palms.
Thanks Kate for the suggestion. Do you think I can spray the solution onto a cosmetic sponge and blot on my face?
I think you should try whatever works for you; however, spraying on a sponge and then sponging your face is going to mean whatever little portion of oil is in the solution, will primarily be in your sponge. Perhaps you’d want a stronger ratio of oil to water in your spray?
I find the wet hands / drop of oil method is best for even coverage and control, and you’re going to lose some of that coverage and control with the spray, and even more with the sponge.
If I apply oil in any other method, say on a cotton puff or cosmetic square, it’s too thick and heavy. Only the wet hands trick has worked admirably well for me, but we are all so different in our approach, and what works and doesn’t work for us, that I’d give any other solution a go and see how it works for you.
This is a little much but do you have access to a box of those very thin latex gloves they sell for medical reasons? They are very thin and light and disposable. Usually sold at drugstores. Much like the kind you see in hair-coloring boxes. Perhaps they would keep your hands free of oil, although you’d end up with a lot more refuse from all the used gloves and you couldn’t really “feel” your skin.
I was wondering about the sponge absorbing the jojoba oil as well. Do you know of any product specifically formulated for rosacea that contains jojoba oil and is in a cream/lotion form, not like the Vita Oil?
I don’t know of a ready-made product which is both a cream/lotion and contains Jojoba — I’ve never found one which suited my needs. I’m just happy with the Vita Oil itself but I don’t have the contact lens issue.
This website, SpaIndex.com: Guide to Spas, has an excellent series of home-made all-natural cosmetics which often can be useful to concoct your own treatments or products with ingredients you control. You could always try a very small batch of one of these treatments/lotions, using Jojoba as the carrier oil.
The downside is you may have to experiment with various recipes and you may discover allergic reactions to one ingredient or another. The upside is, you can make small batches, the investment is small, and you know the ingredients are fresh.

Thanks Kate for all your help.
Kate,
Just wanted to know whether you felt the Bass & Boney company had good customer service. I started to kind of break out (whiteheads) a little with the Dove Sensitive Skin soap (not sure soap or humidity is the cause) and I wrote to the company whether I should switch back to Neutrogena. Someone wrote back and said I should read their website (which I have several times) and did not answer my question about whether someone might have better results with one over the other. Perhaps it doesn’t matter?
Since I received no guidance from the company, I decided to stop using the Dove soap. The soap definitely was causing the breakout to spread over my face. For anyone reading this with oily skin, I would recommend not using Dove Sensitive Skin bar.
Has anyone used Dermarest Rosacea advanced redness I am in Australia so can’t get it but have read very good reviews so I am trying to find out if it’s good?
hi everyone..i just found out i have rosacea, i’d like to know what’s the best solution for it without having to take any medications.
Hi Diva!
I assume you would prefer not to take oral medications, but topical ones are O.K.? Finacea, Metrogel, and Retin-A have been helpful for the p&ps. For the redness, I’m not sure because I don’t get real red in the face.
