Oracea

`Systemic' is just a fancy name for tablets that you take that can affect your whole `system'. Stop in here to talk about antibiotics, accutane and other sorts of oral therapies.

Oracea

i have been on [oracea - once a day- for the past month now. It has made a huge difference in my eruptions. I was having a flare every 6 weeks and since about 3 weeks into the oracea, I have only a few tiny pustules left. It is a little bit of a pain in the neck because you cannot eat for two hours before and an hour after- so I take it first thing in the morning with 8 ounces of water and wait an hour to eat. But that's a small sacrifice to make in order to have my skin back. I wash my face with a few drops of Pentrax (5% tar shampoo) mixed with a few drops of DHC oil cleanser (bought online), gently massage it in then wash with a small amt of Dove foaming facial cleanser for sensitive skin then rinse well. No hot water! I use DHC vitamin c serum, combined with a very small amount of oil of olay night serum moisturizer and a small amount of Alpha Hydroxy lotion and gently apply it to my face at bedtime. My face is really amazingly better- everyone who sees me now is so happy for me. I don't think it is wise to sweat or get overheated- and if I ever go in a heated pool, I use a towel that has been put in ice water to cover my face. I don't exercise much anymore because it breaks out my face. But there is hope if oracea works for you. :)

Oracea isn't available in Australia - but you can get something quite close, close enough to not be worth the extra expense. You could try generic doxycycline 50mg once a day.

Here is the PBS pricing list for doxycycline, 25 tables.
pbs.gov.au: generic doxycycline

Sadly, there is no way Oracea will work if doxycycline didn't (sad) they are chemically the same thing.

What dosage did you take, and for how long ? what symptoms were you hoping to get relief from ? did you suffer from any side effects ?

It might be possible that a longer period, lower dose could be tolerable and beneficial when a shorter term higher dose caused problems. Apart from that, if doxycycline is useless, Oracea will be too.

Hi Tony,

Oracea didn't work for me so my derm put me on Solodyn (low dose timed release minocycline).
That may help you even if doxycycline didn't.

Best wishes,
Melissa

Hi Melissa,

Are you able to say yet whether solodyn is working ? As solodyn is minocycline, (another in the tetracycline family as is doxycycline) it would be quite interesting if that works when Oracea doesn't hmmm (scratch) (thinking) Perhaps the slight chemical difference between the 2 is enough.
