For several years, I have had a problem with redness, spots, and blemishes on my face, especially my cheeks. My doctor told me it was rosacea and gave me some medicated cream that didn't help.

After being gluten free for a while, I noticed that my face was clear for the first time in years. Now the only time I have blemishes is after I might have eaten gluten unintentionally, like after a restaurant meal.

Whatever my skin condition was, I have no doubt that it was somehow connected to gluten.

Interesting post. When I low carbed and ate NO grains for 5 yrs I had no problems w/acne rosacea, although I did have some of the pink flushing on my chin and cheeks.
Since "improving my diet" by including whole grains, raw fruits and goats milk yogurt and elliminating most red meat and all other dairy, the acne rosacea is over the top.
I visited a gi doc who did a test for gluten intolerance last week and hpylori. Waiting to hear back....Thanks for the post, Terry

Got the labwork back.

The celiac test was inconclusive...may have been a "false negative" because of proteins present in sample. I don't understand what that means exactly and I'm going to talk to my gi doc in person next week to find out more. Also the hyplori was inconclusive. Blood work was positive for hpylori. Stool sample was negative. He thinks perhaps I once had it but its gone away (yep I've been healed is what I'm thinking) Still he wants to do an upper endoscopy to determine what's going on which is also why I want to talk w/him and find out his reasons.

In the meantime I'm not eating grains except for rice and gluten free stuff. No white vinegar, mustard, catsup, etc... I understand that if you have probs w/celliac you can have a secondary prob w/lactoce intolerance. From what I've read plain yogurt is ok because of the enzymes...any other info out there????

Wouldn't it be great if this rosacea would respond well to just leaving the grain and dairy alone? No more gluten for this puppy for now. Wonder how long the average person takes to notice a diff?

I've been gluten free for quite a while now and am still having major problems with my skin. Pustules, plaques, peeling, redness, stinging pain, and to top it all off, blackheads which are not supposed to go with rosacea. I was taking doxycycline for a long time but got the mother of all yeast infections and stopped taking that. Now, my face is on fire and gluten has nothing to do with it. The only reason that gluten might affect someone's skin is if it caused major acid formation in their gut. For me, it causes that, plus eczema on my arms and joint pain. Never has it affected my face.

Just learned that my worsening face was probably caused by a mix up in my hormones. So, perhaps going gluten free might actually help...I've been gluten free for a while now but seem to continually accidentally get "glutened". I wonder how long it takes after a gluten attack for the face to settle down...

It's in everything, isn't it? So annoying. Just like dairy, which is what I can't have. (speechless) For me, after a dairy indulgence, it takes about two weeks, sometimes more if it's a bad, bad flare.

I was diagnosed with coeliac disease 9 years ago and have been on a gluten-free diet ever since...I first started getting red on my face 3 years ago and since then its died down but hasn't gone away...and I know I have not eaten any gluten in that time...so I don't think for me that eating gluten makes my face red. Then again I don't know, my rosacea and coeliac could be related on some level (thinking) I guess I will see what the dermatologist thinks.

I've actually had somewhat of the opposite occur to me. Eating yogurt has actually helped my skin. I feel my skin relax after I eat it. And not just plain yogurt, I usually have Activia. I suffer from redness on my cheeks and a bit on my forehead, and annoying acne. I read somewhere that a lack of vitamin D can cause acne so I decided to start eating yogurt, which I'm not a fan of. And it's helped for both the acne and rosacea. The times that I've cut back on dairy I hadn't really noticed any reduction of the redness. Then again, what works for one doesn't work for another. So maybe there are people who would do better off without it.
