Detox Diet

There is a lot of interest in how what you eat can affect your rosacea. Some foods can cause a flareup in rosacea symptoms. Also the makeup of your diet in general will affect your health for sure and also your rosacea.

Detox Diet

Postby Redmond88 on Mon Aug 17, 2009 5:27 am

I happen to be on a detox diet for various reasons. I've had rosacea for years, and lately it has been causing eye problems in addition to all the redness of my face and flaking, peeling skin. My eyes' oil glands have been blocked as a result of the rosacea, and the result has been inflamation and irritation that has led to infections. The first eye episode went away with use of a prescription and then came right back again. I went to an ophthamologist, and she told me (after asking questions about the condition of my eyes) that I've probably had rosacea my whole life, even though it didn't manifest as facial redness until more recently.

Anyway, as a result of this detox diet, my rosacea has almost completely cleared up. The diet is pretty restrictive. Among the foods that I have quit completely while on this diet are: alcohol, coffee, tea, wheat, tomatoes, beef, eggs, cheese (all dairy, in fact), sugar, honey, soy, corn, canned foods, peanut butter. My skin looks much much better. Other physcial symptoms have cleared up as well.

I did drink wine one night while on this diet, and 2 days later my face broke out again. As you probably all know, alcohol is one of the known irritants of rosacea.

So yes diet is very important. It seems that if you look hard enough, you can find a way to control this disease without drugs. My doctor also told me that taking flax seed oil can help.

Re: Detox Diet ... and flax seed oil

Postby Aurelia on Mon Aug 17, 2009 7:14 am

Hi AM, and welcome to the group (wave)

Congratulations on getting such a successful result against your rosacea. Well done, and long may it continue!

Flax seed oil is very popular with rosaceans, but imho it's well worth doing a little reading on uses and possible side effects. Here's one independent article you might like to take a look at:

Kind regards,

Aurelia,
Thanks for the info. I actually think the flax oil was making me feel bad. I stopped taking it.

I actually stopped taking omega 6 and 9 as these just made me flush more. I find omega 3 is sufficient.

Newbie here, after looking at your list of restricted foods. I am wondering what you CAN eat?

i am willing to stop alcohol and most sugars..nothing else

i need carbs and dairy and meat to survive..especially because i still workout 4x a week.

I would love to just eat fish and drink protein shakes mixed with water but its not possible. i know i need carbs to get around in the day and complete my workouts. i have tried eliminating them but i lost weight and felt tired.

Just a tip for those working out... i found to reduce flushing i went from heavy weights low reps to low weights high reps. You will get cut up like this but wont put on much body mass. Creatine also works well for me as it delays fatigue, which is especially good when you want to do more reps due to lower weights.

i mean if stopping all this food would cure me in a year or so i would do it..but you must do it forever.

If carbs and dairy and meat don't bother you, then you really shouldn't have to stop. I have to avoid dairy, and be very careful with cola and vinegar, while my best friend (also with rosacea) can eat anything! (speechless)

Hi Lotusflower! It really is different for everyone, and though it takes time to figure out your own triggers, eventually you will and hopefully they won't be your favorites :(

Here's an interesting note that has been posted and observed by others before on this board: Thursday night I was hit with a 24-hr bug--stomach flu. When it was all over, my skin looked amazing. I am now trying to maintain that by not cheating one bit with dairy.
