Dr Oz recommends Peppermint

Postby puggle1413 on Thu Oct 22, 2009 2:06 am

Hey
I was watching the Dr Oz show and he said this about Peppermint

"Peppermint — Dr. Oz says peppermint address’s all skin irritations. It has natural menthol in it, which makes it an analgesic. You can grind the peppermint to make a pesto and put it on your face, it’s a natural anti-inflammatory — leave the peppermint on for 5 to 10 minutes then rinse it off quickly"

Anybody have any luck with this?

An interesting thought ? It if could be cooling then it might just work. Seeing the word menthol does make me a bit wary though - perhaps it might be too strong.

There doesn't seem to be many reports of rosacea sufferers trying topical crushed peppermint. I'd love to hear how it goes if anyone tries it.

I've recently read that both cinammon and peppermint (any mint) should be avoided if one has rosacea. Wondering if that's why my face flushes everytime I brush my teeth since the toothpaste contains mint flavoring....or would that have more to do w/the circulation in the gums when you brush??? T

Hi Terry, (wave)

Some people have perioral dermatitis in addition to their rosacea and find that the main culprit is their toothpaste. Switching to a different type often does the trick. Is it possible that you have perioral dermatitis?

Hi Aurelia. What I have doesn't look like the pictures. Also it even happens when I use natural orange flavored toothpaste and also if I just use straight baking soda. Is it normal for people w/rosacea to have the redder face when they brush their teeth???? Do you? T

Hmm, in that case, perhaps it is just a physical effect.

Are you someone whose face flushes when bending down to pick up something off the floor, for instance? If so, do you happen to clean your teeth while leaning over the basin? Or do you brush while standing with your head up, only leaning over at the end to swoosh out the water?

Not me ... or not so far. As for others, I'm sorry but I have no idea.

Kind regards,

Hmmm. I notice the lighting in my bathroom is stronger so it pinpoints the red more, which when I notice it makes me go redder, sigh!

From what I have read either in The National Rosacea Society, or in WebMD or Mayo Clinic websites, peppermint and anything with citrus in it can irritate rosacea....that includes ingesting it. Personally I would not trust Dr. Oz.
