Periostat

`Systemic' is just a fancy name for tablets that you take that can affect your whole `system'. Stop in here to talk about antibiotics, accutane and other sorts of oral therapies.

Periostat

Postby ChristineAsher on Mon Jul 13, 2009 2:57 pm

My doctor consented to prescribing Periostat. Oracea is not available in Canada, and periostat 2/20mg pills a day is essentially the same thing. However, I was wondering if anyone had experience using this instead of Oracea? Should I take one pill in the morning, and one mid-day (since there is no delayed release)?

Thank you :)

What did the doctor prescribe? Does the bottle say to take them both at once, or split them up? When I was taking my generic version of Oracea, I took the one pill (50 mg doxycycline) in the morning. Originally, my derm had me on 100 mg doxy daily for two weeks, and he had me split that dosage up, but I must admit it was harder to remember to do so! Another member took two Oracea tablets at the same time, in the morning, under her doctor's orders.

I'm trying to find anything on the board to see if someone else also took Periostat and what they did. Hmmm, here's a thread, but it might just confuse you.

Just check with your derm and see what he says, and why he recommends doing it that particular way. Remember to take it one hour before eating, or two hours after eating (or with a cracker if you get stomach upset). I took mine with food, and I wasn't supposed to (for some reason, my derm said it was okay!); that's probably why it didn't work.

My guess is that at 20mg 2xs a day, it will mimic the 40mg timed release of Oracea. I took it that way for a couple of months when I was inbetween insurances [I robbed my hubbies periostat] it worked fine, but I prefer taking 1 pill a day.

Thanks! :)

My doctor didn't suggest the periostat, I asked her for it as a better alternative for me than 100mg minocycline. She really didn't know much about it, and I was just curious whether people who tried periostat took the 40mg at once, or spaced out (since I am trying to mimic the Oracea and it has time release). Today I spaced it out 12 hours, but I am not sure what I'll do tomorrow. It was hard to take two pills a day, at separate times, with out eating before or after. Patty: Did you take your two pills at once, or, if not, how long did you space them out?

I spaced them out. I took the 1st one in the morning an hour or so before eating, and the 2nd whenever I remembered in the afternoon. That was the problem, it was hard to remember to take the 2nd one. I'm glad it was only for a short time. I much prefer to take my one 50mg capsule in the morning and be done with it... and it seems not to make a difference [to me anyway] if it's spaced out or taken all at once. Makes me wonder if the timed release feature is really a way to make a cheap medication super expensive.

hi there..

being in the dental field, I have never heard of such a thing plus some of the ingredients used can actually damage and change the color in your teeth. If you have perio issues, you should find a certified general DDS who uses PERIO protect, the new way to fight perio issues.

Hello Johnswhite,

Welcome to the group. What can you tell us from your dental experience about Periostat ? I had thought that it was a well known prescription option for severe gum infection ?

cheers,
davidp.

p.s. I hope that you understand that I have removed the signature link to a gaming site as it seems out of place here and liable to look, well, kind of spam like.

Periostat is just a form of doxy, but I think the tabs are 20 mg each....I'm not sure what you mean by "ingredients"? Do you mean as an antibiotic, like tetracycline can stain the teeth yellow?

Since Periostat is basically just doxy, I think Patty was taking them for her rosacea, not for dental issues. It's just another option for us, in addition to generic doxy, Oracea, etc. :)
