aveeno ultra calming with feverfew: product reviews

There is a lot of interest from rosacea sufferers in treating their rosacea with natural or herbal therapies and remedies. Many shy away from treatments like antibiotics and metrogel. So far the best collection of information about natural products I’ve found is a paper called Treatment of Rosacea with Herbal Ingredients. One of the herbs mentioned in that paper was Feverfew. Just to recap ;

From: treating rosacea with herbs

Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium)

One of the primary active components of feverfew, parthenolide, inhibits serotonin release from platelets. Feverfew inhibits 5-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase, resulting in a reduction in human blood platelet aggregation.

In a recent study by Martin and associates, 45 days of treatment with 1% feverfew PFE (parthenolide-free extract) – Aveeno Daily Moisturizer Ultracalming, improved mild inflammatory acne by inhibiting the release of inflammatory markers from activated lymphocytes and reducing neutrophil chemotaxis. It is these immunomodulating properties that suggest feverfew PFE[TM] may be a useful treatment for rosacea.

Aveeno has released 3 products from their `Active Naturals Feverfew’ range ; Ultra-Calming Daily Moisturizer with SPF 15, Ultra-Calming Moisturizing Cream and Ultra-Calming Foaming Cleanser.

From: Active Naturals Feverfew

A calming and soothing solution for Sensitive Skin, Feverfew, a resilient flower related to chamomile, thrives in the harsh conditions of the Mediterranean mountain region. For centuries this hardy little flower has been cultivated for its medicinal value. AVEENO® scientists unlocked feverfew’s true potential by creating a unique way to process feverfew which retains the naturally active benefits of the ingredient to soothe and calm irritated skin.

Advancing the Science of Feverfew

Naturally calming feverfew found in AVEENO® is a patented skincare breakthrough and has been shown in preclinical testing to effectively deliver the broadest range of anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits compared with over 2,000 other natural ingredients. In addition to providing anti-oxidant activity, it calms and soothes compromised and assaulted skin. Feverfew is proven to reduce redness and irritation caused by internal and external aggressions.

From: ULTRA-CALMING DAILY MOISTURIZER WITH SPF 15

With naturally calming feverfew, a natural ingredient related to chamomile, this light, fast-absorbing moisturizer is clinically proven to visibly reduce facial redness and soothe irritation. It helps to actively manage dry, red uncomfortable skin. Ultra-Calming Daily Moisturizer also helps maintain healthy-looking skin and is shown in clinical studies to deliver visible skin improvements in as little as one week.

Use it daily to reduce redness, calm and soothe irritations, and diminish blotchiness for even-looking skin. It is gentle enough to use every day and safe enough for the most sensitive skin, even those with rosacea.

Additional Product Benefits Include: UVA/UVB sunscreens, oil-free, hypoallergenic, noncomedogenic

A couple of weeks ago, I saw a comercial for Aveeno Ultra Calming Foaming Cleanser and it talked about removing the redness in your skin. Well, I have never really thought a lotion or cleanser would do anything for me, but decided I’d try this one and ohhhhhh am I so glad I did! In the first few days of using it, there was no change and I was discouraged, but by the end of the first week, I could see an amazing difference and didn’t need to even TRY to use the green cover stick. I used my normal make up and for the first time in a LONG time I didn’t see these big red cheeks staring back at me! I’m not saying this product will do miracles or even work for everyone, but it sure did help me! And for like 7 bucks at Walmart, it was sure worth a shot!

I’ve been using Aveeno Ultra-Calming moiturizing cream. It seems to help a little, but it doesn’t moisturize quite enough at times. Others here have said that it made their redness worse, however.

I tried Aveeno Ultra Calming Moisturizing Cream on the right side of my face last evening. It caused my mildly red face to become bright red and very inflammed on the right side. I washed it off, put some zinc oxide on which calmed it down a bit.

I have been trying both Aveeno and Eucerin lines of redness relief washes, sunscreens and moisturizers. So far I really like the Eucerin sensitive wash (have not broken into the Aveeno bottle yet), find the nighttime Eucerin fairly good, the Aveeno Ultra Calming Moisturizer with sunscreen (15) absolutely wonderful and the Ultra Calming Moisturizer really good. I just bought the Eucerin Sunscreen Moisturizer (30) but haven’t opened it yet. If I had to choose between the two brands, Aveeno would be the one. It can calm the worst redness very quickly, even if I have been out in the cold and wind and actually have swelling. It leaves my skin silky smooth.

Just wanted you all to know I have found a new cleanser (Aveeno Ultra Calming) that is working out well for me. I used to use Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser in a bottle but discovered (after using it for 3 years) that it does not remove the tinted Zinco. I had seen similar messages posted about Cetaphil, but I was hooked and did not think it did not remove my Zinco until I “cheated” and used an alcohol based toner a couple times and saw beige all over the cotton square. Yuk, made me wonder what else it did not take off or if it left too much stuff on my face…would that contribute to acne ? This Aveeno product is not drying and not oily and when I put it on my face it feels soothing.

The Aveeno Ultra Calming Moisturizing Cream was heavily scented and made my skin bright red with a burning sensation. I thought maybe I just had to get used to it, but my skin reaction was the same after 2 weeks.

I tried the Aveeno Ultra Calming Daily Moisturizer SPF 15, and after 2 days I have to say I love it. Its gentle on my skin, feels good an absorbs quickly. I dont feel shiny or greasy. I was hesitant at first because I suffer from allegies and the Feverfew it contains is a pollen. It seems that many people allergic to pollen arer allergic to the Aveeno Ultra Calming. Its been good, my skin feels soft and less rough. Now I want to try the cleanser but it was discontinued at Walgreens, let see if I can find it at Walmart.

I have been using the Aveeno Ultra Calming cleanser, and so far I love it. It feels so nice, I actually look forward to washing my face now, and I cannot believe how quickly I saw results. I would like to try the moisterizer, but I am concernec because it’s only SPF 15; I wish they would have made it SPF 30 :-(

Aveeno Ultra Calming Foaming Cleanser and the moisturizer/sunscreen has really improved my rosacea. I was using Cetaphil and sometimes Eucerin but they weren’t getting my face clean enough. It’s relatively inexpensive and worth a try.

I live in Australia and I would love to try the Aveeno ultra calming cream and complimentary products. But it is not available in Oz does anyone know any way I could buy it online. I have tried a few sites but when it comes to filling in delivery address it will not accept an australian address.

#12 Digital Davo on 12.30.08 at 2:25 pm

Hi G.G.,

I too think it would be great to be able to try the Aveeno Ultra Calming Range in Australia. I haven’t been brave/bold enough to order it from the US yet though. Please let us know how you get on if you do decide to try it.

You can purchase the aveeno ultra calming range on ebay from american stores/users. I live in Australia & purchase from ebay often

#14 Erin on 01.16.09 at 11:35 am

I have just purchased the Aveeno Ultra Calming Daily Moisturizer SPF 15. If anyone out there needs it, I can buy it at Walmart and ship it to you at cost. Just let me know. I’ve had the red cheeks for as long as I can remember so I’m really hoping that Aveeno does something! It smells really good, which is more than I can say for the La Roche-Posay Rosaliac moisturizer.

#15 g.g. on 01.24.09 at 6:57 pm

thanks for the response on buying aveeno online, I will give ebay ago. I will keep you posted on how my skin responds.

#16 Scarlett on 02.17.09 at 9:25 am

I’m keen to try the ultra calming products also and found some suppliers on ebay that ship to Australia. Looks to be quite expensive?! One supplier selling Aveeno products around US$15-18 is charging around US$30 shipping – or with insurance – up to US$67 shipping! eek.

Magview – who do you order and ship from in the US?

Any suggestions anyone?

#17 magview on 02.17.09 at 9:56 am

hey, I purchased mine thru mrs reidsusasupermarket , that was her username. Just search for aveeno ultra calming & you’ll see hers there. I didnt pay too much, insurance was like 5 bux. Its well worth it, but I dont use aveeno anymore cuz it made me lil red at times & itchy.

Try eucerin products as the green tinted spf moisturizer, shower gel & night cream have made me face a lil less red & feels smooth unlike aveeno which made me blotchy, itchy at times.

I noticed there wasn’t a thread for this, so I figured it would be best posted here. I have been dealing with rosacea for a couple of years now and wanted to let you all know about Mario Badescu’s line of products designed for rosacea sufferers. I have tried everything and since switching to Mario have been able to live a totally normal life, with the occasional minor flushing. There are cleansers, toners, lotions, masks, and my personal favorite the Control Cream. Most of their products are incredibly well priced, especially in comparison to Clinique and Aveeno. If you go to their website, you can fill out a skin evaluation and they will send you free samples of products they feel would work best for you. Hope you get to try it out! It has completely changed my life.

For years, nothing could heal the redness on my face until I found the aveeno ultra calming. Works wonders! I need to use it every night and haven’t had those bad flare ups in ages. Nothing doctors prescribes really worked, nothing else I tried worked. I am very happy with it. But I guess everyone’s skin is different.

#20 Krista on 04.22.09 at 7:53 am

Hello,

I too have tried the Aveeno Ultra Calming product line. I love the foaming cleanser and the night moisturizer…wonderful. However I find the daily moisturizer with SPF 15 makes my face flush, and I suspect it is the chemical sunscreen. I spoke with my physician and she recommended Ti-Silc sunblock SPF 45 (untinted and tinted) and I love the tinted sunblock, it leaves my skin a bit shiny but a little mineral powder takes it away. It doesn’t completely cover my redness, but it makes me feel almost rosacea free.

Ti-Silc is a chemical free sun block with light weight moisturizers offering an SPF of 45 to block out damaging UVA and UVB rays. It contains natural Titanium Dioxide as the main active ingredient, with added antioxidants (vitamins A and E and melanin) to further protect your skin from environmental damage.
Ti-Silc is a non-irritating silicone based formula, s water proof, fragrence free, paba free, non-comedogenic and compatible under make-up. It retains SPF after 80 minutes of activity in the water or perspiring and has a 90% UVA block.

My daughter who has just the flushing type of Rosacea tried this and it practically caused a burn! Very bad with her barrier impairment issues.

I really loved the Aveeno Ultra Calming Night Cream. It worked better than anything I have tried. I used it both morning and night and had over a year without a flareup.

Unfortunately it has been discontinued. I called Aveeno when it disappeared from the stores and they told me they are only making the cleanser and day cream.

The only products in this range now are the foaming cleanser, a cream cleanser, an SPF 15 moisturizer, and an SPF 30 moisturizer.

I like the foaming cleanser a lot, but they need to fix the pump. It always got stuck

#25 Annamarie on 01.15.10 at 8:20 am

I live in New Zealand and love the Aveeno Ultra-calming range, especially the ultra-calming daily moisturizer spf 15. I have not been able to get it for a few months, now I hear its been recalled! Why? My skin is too sensitive for the positevely radiant range, it makes my skin red and sore. My teenage sons love the Ultra-calming too.

#26 Cy on 01.25.10 at 1:24 am

I’ve had rosacea ever since I can remember. Nothing has worked (ie. green stick, sunscreens, lotions, metrogel, cetaphil). I began using Bare Minerals and it helps the rosacea some but tends to clog my pores and doesn’t remove easily. You CANNOT sleep in it like it brags on the box.

However, my rosacea has moved from my cheeks to my neck and chest. I glow like a lightbulb and then if I am stressed it gets even worse. Itchy, burning, swollen ugly mess. I now have developed the little broken veins in the cheek area due to the rosacea.

I am going to Walgreens to buy the Aveno feverfew lotion and try it. I’ll blog the results. I know in the past anything with a sunscreen in it causes me severe redness, irritation, and almost burning my skin. Cleansers do the same or they are so mild they don’t work at all. We’ll see. Used a face mask once that literally left me burnt for a week.

#27 Linda Barton on 01.26.10 at 10:38 am

I have sensitive skin. Yet, I do not have rosacea. There is something in every daily moisturizing sun screen product that irritates my skin. Even the Aveeno daily moisturizer oatmeal and soy (green cap) product with sun screen, irritates my skin. I have just tried the daily moisturizer with feverfew spf 15. Surprisingly, it does not irritate my skin. I am very happy with this product.

#28 Cy on 01.26.10 at 11:07 am

I bought the Aveeno with feverfew yesterday. Tried it last night & today. I don’t notice any irritation but it doesn’t WOW me either. My skin is still hot and red. Going to give it a try. The odor of the sunscreen does make my eyes water a little as I generally cannot wear sunscreen at all for this reason. For the price, one can only hope it has results.

#29 Linds on 02.13.10 at 2:31 am

I have fair, super sensitive skin, and eczema. I bought the ultra calming cleanser and moisturizer and used it twice and my face broke out in a huge red, rash. My face swelled up and my eczema started to weep. I had to miss work because it was so bad that my eyelids were swollen.
I went to Wal-mart yesterday and got my money back. But I am still suffering from the effects of this crap…

#30 jmk on 02.25.10 at 12:27 pm

I have been using the Aveeno Ultra Calming lotion for the past six weeks. I didn’t really notice any difference for the first couple of weeks, but for the past two weeks, my redness has faded quite a bit, and that mottled look I get under my eyes near my nose has really evened out. It’s a pretty inexpensive lotion, so I am going to stick with it for awhile.

#31 KAR on 02.26.10 at 10:46 pm

Beware-The Aveeno Ultra-Calming Moristurizer with feverfew did exactly the opposite of reducing redness. I applied and went for a walk. 2 hours later my face felt like it was on fire. It turned bright red and stayed that way for a few hours.

#32 Andrea on 03.08.10 at 12:33 am

After reading BW’s suggestion about Mario Badescu products, I went on their site and completed the questionnaire. They did send me a regime for Rosacea. The samples included the control creme BW mentions and an Azulene mask – Both excellent.

Did everything they said it would and more – cleared pores, reduced redness and pustules, calmed inflammation.

I placed an order for both products, each under 20$ US. I live in Canada and ordered from New York so the shipping charges (12$ US international) added to the cost. There may also be some tariffs to get it into Canada.

They also have a Seaweed Night Creme I might love – just going to try it a few a days more

#33 Stacey on 03.08.10 at 8:13 am

I have rosacea and tried The Aveeno Ultra-Calming Moristurizer with feverfew today….HATE IT!!
It made my face so red that it actually stung for the first time in I don’t know how long. This is crazy for a product that claims to calm redness to do the opposite. And WHY did Aveeno put fragrance in the moisturizer? Fragrance alone is an irritant to rosacea sufferers.

#34 diana on 03.09.10 at 1:47 am

I tried the Aveeno Ultra Calming Daily Moisturizer SPF 15, and it caused a rash immediately. I have not tried the cream without the spf, or the face wash.
