Recently that the Australian company Microskin has opened an office in New York. The Brisbane office opened in July 2005, with the NY office opening in January 2010.

Microskin mention rosacea as one of the conditions that they treat. The product is slated as a simulated second skin. The product is applied using a Stipple (a special type of sponge) or an air brush for larger areas.

The company says that the product will not rub off, is completely waterproof, allows the skin to breathe and sweat, and lasts for several days.

The New York Times published an article on February 24, 2010 that highlighted the use of microskin as a coverup for Vitiligo.

Vitiligo: Ignoring What Is Painfully Obvious

Starting on Friday, vitiligo patients will have an alternative stateside. Microskin — a simulated second skin that’s been available in Australia for years — is set to open its first outpost in the United States at the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of New York, in Midtown. Microskin is formulated to bridge the gap between a vitiligo patient’s paler patches and unaffected skin so that skin tone appears even. (It can also cover burns, birthmarks and the effects of psoriasis.)

Each shade is customized. “There’s only one skin color for one person in the world,” said Linda Lowndes, who founded Microskin in 2005 after working as a makeup artist. “I don’t care if you’re black or white.”

Microskin is waterproof and won’t rub off on clothing. “You’ve got to use a removing serum to break the barrier,” she said, referring to a liquid that is included in the Microskin system.

…

Still, at the start, applying Microskin on his face, arms and legs would take 75 minutes, which was “pretty annoying,” he said. He does his face daily, but Microskin lasts for a few days elsewhere. And practice has made the application faster.

The Microskin system, with training, starts at $670 for sponge application and rises to $2,250 for airbrush application. Seasonal scans ($200) are recommended to update your Microskin shade.

The article also mentions Dermablend, ColorTration and Cover FX as options for covering up

Another option is camouflage. Some patients with vitiligo, rosacea or birthmarks rely on opaque foundations specially marketed to mask them. Dermablend and ColorTration are two. Lee Thomas, a television broadcaster who wrote a book about his vitiligo called “Turning White,” endorses another foundation, Cover FX, on his Web site.

For more information about Microskin see:

US Site: http://www.microskincenter.com/

Australian site: http://www.microskin.com.au/

Microskin has been in contact with me in the past and say that they have seen rosacea patients. Microskin received national coverage in a 2006 item on A Current Affair titled Second Skin (the video link to the article doesn’t appear to work).

There are very few good treatments for the redness of rosacea. Being able to cover the red angry face of rosacea can do wonders for self esteem.

Would love to hear from anyone who tries it to cover up their rosacea.

Prosacea is promoted as a homeopathic topical gel to treat Rosacea. Prosacea is said to contain medically recognized homeopathic ingredients that provides “complete and effective treatment for rosacea”.

Prosacea is conveniently available over the counter at stores like Walgreens. Prosacea is only briefly mentioned in the online rosacea support groups. Below is a hopefully balanced selection of user comments from rosacea sufferers who have tried Prosacea.

Prosacea lists its Active Ingredients as Sulphur 1x (Rosacea/Acne Treatment Gel), and Inactive Ingredients as Acrylates, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Diazolidinyl Urea, Lactose, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Tetrasodium EDTA, Triethanolamine, Water.

Best I can tell, “Sulphur 1x” is a homeopathic measure which means 10% sulphur. So it would appear that any possible benefits seen when using Prosacea are based on the inclusion of sulphur. If you are a homeopathic expert, please feel free to leave a comment below to confirm that Sulphur 1X does indeed mean 10% Sulphur. Thanks.

I have some great news to share! I have had Rosacea since 1994 (my pregnancy brought it on) and Finally, an over the counter treatment that works!!!!! The Product is called “Prosacea” and I bought it at Walgreens for $9.99. It is a tube of “homeopathic gel”. I find it an ANSWER to prayers!!! It’s good to be here to share the news…… Try it…… it may help a lot of discouraged sufferers!

Hi everyone!!! I’m back with my report!

I LOVE PROSACEA!! Many of the reviews said that the users saw immediate results within 1-2 days. For me, it took about 10 days to see results. However, now all of the bumps are gone and the redness has faded incredibly!

hikari on Tue Jan 22, 2008

I am bummed to say that one month after starting Prosacea my skin is not looking good again. The little bumps have re-appeared, although the redness and painful under the skin bumps have not yet. I guess it’s back to square one…

Prosacea is AWESOME!!. Have been using this product since NOV 2007, once a day in the morning. I’m on my second tube. $10 dollars for fixing a disheartening problem I’ve been dealing with for over 15 years. My skin is now beautiful. My nose is no longer red, not swollen or sore, no more pustules. I look in the mirror and can’t believe how great my skin looks, with or without makeup. Others have noticed the improvement, too.

My friend also has a bad case of rosacea like mine, her skin started looking so much better, I asked her what she was doing and it was the Prosacea she picked up at a drug store. I have spent literally thousands of dollars trying to correct my rosacea and can’t believe a cheap little tube of ointment cleared it up. I am still amazed. I’ve have never posted on any forum like this, but I had such a positive experience-I just wanted to share it.

Update: The Urgent Relief Cream contains hydrocortisone 0.5%. Perhaps some care should be used with the Urgent Relief Cream as we know that over the counter steroids can cause rosacea itself.

Paul H says:

I have been using the Clinique daily redness relief cream and it is really good. I have been unable to tolerate ANYTHING – but this seems to be ok. The “urgent relief cream” is OK also, but it is mainly for “itching,” and doesn’t work as well as the daily redness relief cream, which is very soothing.

bellemichelle says:

The urgent relief cream is NOT a rosacea product, but for reactive redness. It’s just hydrocortizone actually, and hydrocortizone doesn’t do anything for rosacea. Save your money on that one, especially at $30!

The daily relief cream is identical to the CX relief cream, just less expensive. I like it though, it’s a nice mild moisturizer. Don’t believe the claims about it “over time reducing rosacea flare-ups”, I can’t believe how much companies get away with in their marketing!

They have a sunscreen and cleanser too. The sunscreen is too oily for my skin, but it’s gentle at least, I didn’t react to it. The cleanser is my favorite product, it’s mild and non-reactive and it doesn’t dry your skin out.

mecheleshnm says:

Hi, I’ve been using Clinique’s Redness Relief for a week so far. Results are good, not great. On the plus side, it’s the only product I’ve tried (and I’ve tried a lot!) that gives me immediate relief. The relief though only lasts a few hours. I’m going to keep using it
because and relief is welcome– and it costs $40! I’ll check back in a month and let you know how it’s going.

Katgo says:

I swung by the clinique counter for something else right before christmas and saw this line…of course I had to try it! I bought the cleanser ($25), the moisturizer ($65), i refused to buy the calming stuff since it was full of hydrocortisone. Basically, it’s a total waste of money. The cleanser was nice, but not worth that kind of cash, and the cream is meant for all the clinique skintypes(1,2,3,4) therefore isn’t very moisurizing.

I used it for three days and called it quits. My skin is combination and this stuff was making it very dry/dehyrated, which in turn lead to my face becoming more red! The women at the clinique counter also said they had a training on this product and were told to tell clients not even to use other clinique products in combination with this stuff or it would effect results, so who knows if they want you to even take your meds with these products.

Lucky for me, the clinique counter took all these products back, so you can always try it pretty risk free. If you do buy this product, I hope you have better results

I love CHOICE Magazine in Australia. They do great reviews, always concentrating on practical outcomes. A recent report dealt with moisturisers (yes we spell them with an "s") on the Australian market that also contain sunscreen. For those that want both the protection offered by a sunscreen and a good moisturizer, this report is for you. A solid, but gentle cleansing, moisturizing and sunscreen regime is a key requirement for all rosacea sufferers.

Their detailed report is titled Moisturisers with Sunscreen, and is available from their web site for $13.95.

As a special favour to all you out there, here are the 3 cheapest of the recommended products, with their manufacturer’s fancy sounding description.

Garnier Nutritionist Regenerating Daily Moisturiser SPF 15 (This day cream helps the appearance of fine lines look smoother and skin look brighter while providing added protection against the signs of ageing with SPF15.)

Dove Essential Nutrients Protective Day Cream SPF 15 (Rich, smooth Deep Moisture Day Cream SPF 15 combines broad-spectrum UV protection and rich moisture to quench, hydrate and defend dry skin, for a healthy looking glow that lasts.)

Cancer Council Moisturising Face Cream SPF 30+ (A light, non-oily hydrating lotion specially formulated for daily use either alone or under make up. Contains UVA and UVB sunscreen filters for broad spectrum skin protection.)

As well as making some recommendations, the CHOICE report also makes some good points about sunscreens in general.

As well as protecting us from cancer, sunscreen can reduce the signs of premature aging, such as wrinkling, rough skin, broken or burst capillaries, and uneven colouring. The sun is thought to be responsible for about 90% of the visible signs of aging among Australians.

I get the feeling that the average Australia still doesn’t use enough sunscreen, especially given our climate. Perhaps a moisturizer with a sunscreen in one way to get better protection.

Tinted moisturisers are not spoken of very often, but I think they are a valuable rosacea tool. Many people don’t like to wear makeup everyday. Likewise a tinted moisturiser is perfect for men because it doesn’t look like makeup. In fact you can’t see it at all.

This article was first highlighted by Rosacea News in March 2006 as result of the 2006 Annual Meeting of the AAD, Poster Session in San Francisco. The paper was called Tolerability and efficacy of a moisturizing lotion containing 0.1% kinetin for improving the signs of acne rosacea in facial and neck skin.

The follow-on paper has now been published in a peer reviewed journal, Clinical and Experimental Dermatology.

Paula Begoun has this to say about Kinetin.

Kinetin is a plant-growth hormone, and its technical name is N6-furfuryladenine. What makes kinetin interesting are the in vitro and animal studies demonstrating its effect as a growth factor.

…

I suspect that when it’s applied topically, kinetin isn’t of much use to the skin cell, and even if it could be utilized, there probably isn’t enough kinetin in any product to have a negative or positive impact but that is only a guess, no one knows for sure (Source: Dermatologic Clinics, October 2000, pages 609-615).

So the summary is that there appears to be some modest improvement in rosacea redness and lesions (papules/pustules) by using topical kinetin. Here is the abstract.

Topical kinetin 0.1% lotion for improving the signs and symptoms of rosacea., Clin Exp Dermatol. 2007 Sep 14; Wu JJ, Weinstein GD, Kricorian GJ, Kormeili T, McCullough JL. Department of Dermatology, University of California, Irvine, Irvine, CA, USA.

Many patients with rosacea are unable to tolerate extended treatment periods with topical agents because of the unusually high skin sensitivity that often accompanies rosacea. Kinetin (N(6)-furfuryladenine) is a plant cytokinin that reportedly helps restore skin barrier function and may be useful to ameliorate the signs and symptoms of rosacea. The purpose of this open-label study was to determine the tolerance and efficacy of twice-daily application of kinetin 0.1% lotion for improving the signs and symptoms of mild to moderate facial rosacea. Subjects applied kinetin 0.1% lotion twice daily to the face, with daily use of a sunscreen of sun protection factor 30. Subjects were evaluated at baseline and at 4-week intervals for 12 weeks to assess efficacy and tolerance. Results of this study suggest that kinetin 0.1% lotion is a well-tolerated moisturizing lotion option for subjects with mild to moderate inflammatory rosacea.

This study is saying that a gentle moisturizer is an important part of a rosacea beating regime. This was one of the gems that took me years to realize. In order to best treat rosacea, you will need to find a good gentle skin care routine. This routine should include a cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. Any prescription or over the counter topicals can then be added to your gentle care regime.

Another recent study found similar benefits when using Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. The conclusion of that 2006 study was that “Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser may be a good choice for the cleansing part of a total rosacea skin care regimen.” This study concludes “in the management of rosacea, basic skin care regimens, including daily use of a therapeutic moisturizer, offer optimal benefits“.

Beneficial use of Cetaphil(R) Moisturizing Cream as part of a daily skin care regimen for individuals with rosacea. J Dermatolog Treat. 2007;18(3):158-62. , Laquieze S, Czernielewski J, Baltas E. , PERITESCO. Paris. France.

Introduction: Rosacea is a common and chronic disorder characterized by flushing, erythema, papules, pustules, and telangiectasia on the central part of the face. Because the facial skin of individuals with rosacea is particularly sensitive, irritants can trigger a worsening of the signs and symptoms of the disease. This enhanced sensitivity is thought to be linked to a deficient stratum corneum barrier function.

Materials and methods: In the present study, 20 individuals receiving twice-daily applications of metronidazole 0.75% gel for at least 15 days applied a gentle non-irritating moisturizing cream (Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream) twice daily for 15 days on one half of the face; the other side remained treated with metronidazole only and served as the control.

Results: Clinical assessments, confirmed by biophysical measurements (electrical capacitance, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and lactic acid stinging test), provided evidence that the moisturizer contributed to the restoration of the skin barrier: skin dryness, roughness and desquamation were much improved and skin sensitivity was significantly reduced. Skin properties and skin discomfort were also greatly enhanced and the patients were very satisfied with the product.

Conclusions: It can thus be concluded that in the management of rosacea, basic skin care regimens, including daily use of a therapeutic moisturizer, offer optimal benefits.

In 2005 a new range of skin care products from Eucerin (Beiersdorf Inc) called Eucerin Redness Relief was released. They are claimed as “Safe for sensitive skin and appropriate for Rosacea”.

The Eucerin Redness Relief system has been clinically proven to provide immediate redness relief, and improve the condition of visibly red skin in four weeks.

The Eucerin Redness Relief products consist of ;

The Soothing Cleanser is a soap-free formula that gently cleanses redness-prone skin.

The Daily Perfecting Lotion has an SPF of 15 and is promoted a daytime moisturizer for intensive or daily redness.

The Soothing Moisture Lotion SPF15 is a daytime moisturizer for mild or occasional facial redness.

The Soothing Night Creme is an intensive moisturizer with glycerin and lipids.

In the last year or so several members of the rosacea-support group have tried these products.

joann_scanlon2000 says :

I have been using the Eucerin redness relief cleanser for several months works very well for my skin but I didn’t care for the rest of the products in the redness relief line.

minina62 says :

I use Finacea once a day, and use Eucerin Redness Relief line to wash my face and moisturize. So far my skin hasn’t been this good in ages. I used to have flareups once a month and they were so serious that I had to take antibiotics for it. Not any longer.

mandyrain2002 says :

As far as cosmetics are concerned, I use Eucerin Redness Relief stuff
for skin care. It works pretty well, but I’m always on the hunt for
something better.

SimplyPoetic says :

I wear the green sunscreen and the night redness relief cream, and I love it! I wear it and then put zinco on top of it, and feel a strong barrier on my face! I also live in Texas, and as you know we have some HOT weather, and it hasn’t melted off yet. I am sure if you got a good sweat going on, anything would eventually wear off.

At first I didn’t like the green color, but I got pass that, and found if you use it as a base and add to it..you are better off.

Try the night cream it is not green, but has a nice sheer feel to it, and it smells nice.

bjshadder says :

I’ve tried the cleanser, day lotion and soothing night cream. I love the cleanser and night cream – it’s the only cleanser I’ve been able to use without irritation or dryness. It’s a gel cleanser and it’s non-foaming and I have trouble with foaming cleansers – this is really great for me. The Soothing Night Cream is wonderful for me too – it’s the only thing that I’ve found that doesn’t irritate my skin and it actually reversed a really bad episode of irritation and flushing and now my skin is much calmer. The day lotion is okay – it’s not moisturizing enough for me – it has a drier texture and it just doesn’t do much for me. It doesn’t irritate my skin at all though, so if you have oilier skin, it might work well. I was a bit leary of the sunscreen, but I can tolerate it just fine. I’m returning the day lotion though because although the green tint does cancel out the red, I can’t wear it under makeup because it’s not moisturizing enough and I have to wear another moisturizer in addition to it, which is way too much product on my skin at once.

bjshadder followup up with saying :

Last week I wrote a raving review of these products. Well, I hate to say that the honeymoon is over, and I’m seeking an annullment! Yes, they are going back to Walgreen’s today.

They aren’t anything special – the anti-redness properties aren’t making me any less red anymore, and last night after I washed and applied the soothing night cream, I actually had a flare up! So, nope, they are totally out. I also have the day lotion, and while it doesn’t irritate my skin, I am getting oilier than usual during the day and oily skin is one of my triggers, so it’s going back too. They are too expensive for drugstore products not to work.

rjarrell2004 says :

I have tried the Eucerin redness relief line. I love the cleanser and still use it at night because it does a good job of taking off my makeup without overdrying my skin – gently massage on and leave for a minute or two to get a good clean. You probably don’t need to worry about taking off makeup, so you may not need to leave it on as long as I do. The redness relief daily perfecting lotion has a green tint to it and does a pretty good job of neutralizing my redness. It caused my skin to be a bit oily and bumpy, so I’ve stopped using it. The soothing night cream worked well, but I prefer Good Skin All Calm Moisture Lotion as it is a bit less oily and leaves my skin with a great texture. I also use All Calm soothing toner and creamy cleanser in the morning. I didn’t try the Eucerin redness relief stick for spot treatment.

ken972 says :

I tried out the Eucerin Redness relief products myself. The only relief I got was the green tint of those products took some of the redness away. Not much of a breakthrough. And some did sting a little. Seems some of these new products are just about masking the redness instead of actually reducing it.

Erika_in_Michigan says :

I caved in to the pressure & bought the cleanser & night creme (from Rite Aid). Used it for 4 days & returned both items (keep those receipts!). The cleanser made me really red, and I would stay red longer than usual. I was also starting to get a build up of dry skin on my chin. The night cream didn’t calm my skin, & in the morning I’d be a bit pinker & greasier than normal.

NanHIm says :

I have just begun using it within the past couple of weeks. I like the cleanser as it is a foaming type. My face is slightly red after cleansing but it always is, no matter what I use.

I do not like the texture of the moisturizer. The green color does help to tone down redness though.

I have been using these products for about a month and overall am pleased. No miracle cure but they work well enough.

I didn’t like the Daily Perfecting Lotion at first as it doesn’t appear to moisturize very well but it does do a good job of toning down the redness. Now, as I write this, I am wondering if it is even intended to be a moisturizer. Does anyone know?

I do plan to continue using this for the forseeable future, or until someone here writes about some other product that catches my eye.

clpass2000 says :

I have been using the Eucerin Soothing Redness Relief Cleanser for two weeks now with no luck. My redness is the same and I have twice the amount of Papules & Pustules. I will stop using it today….I assume I will have no luck with the rest of their “Rosacea claimed Friendly Line”

beefamerica says :

I like the cleanser well enough. Not sure to what extent it actually “soothes” my skin or relieves redness. But it at least seems not to irritate, which is a rarity. And it rinses off well. My face doesn’t feel tight after washing like it did with the Cetaphil bar soap.

In my ongoing quest for a decent sunblock I looked at the Daily Perfecting Lotion as well, but the tinted formula doesn’t blend in well enough for a dude.

I tried this and was not impressed with it. It didn’t do anything for me.

All their products burn my skin and make me red as a radish

sk8shan5 says:

Sorry, I couldn’t find the original post in my e-mails. Yet, I swear by this line. It’s the only thing that doesn’t make my face burn. The only thing I’d say to avoid is that green cover stick. It covers great, but there is not enough product in it to warrant a purchase. I used it a total of 3 times – not even covering my whole face – before it was empty. The rest of the stuff, especiallly the cleanser seem to work well for me.

polockhart says:

I really like the Eucerin Sensitive Skin wash. It is very gentle and extremely economical. One squirt lathers up nicely so the bottle lasted for several months. I have tried the nighttime Redness Relief cream and like it although I think some people might find it irritating. I also have the sunscreen and like that as well.

I would also recommend the Aveeno Ultra Calming products. They have feverfew in them which really calms down my skin quickly. I really like the Ultra Calming Moisturizer with sunscreen the best of all I have tried. I just bought that last night at Eckerd on sale for $13 minus $2 on a coupon. I don’t like the foaming face wash, it doesn’t really lather up and seems wasteful. The nighttime cream is excellent and I use that more than the Eucerin. All products are over the counter and reasonably priced.

Update:

Since I wrote this article Eucerin has released a new product in the Redness Relief product range. According to Eucerin the Soothing Anti-Aging Serum is the first anti-aging serum specially formulated for red facial skin. They claim that it can visibly reduce red skin with concentrated `skin soothing’ Licochalcone and has proven reduction of fine lines and wrinkles from its usage of Coenzyme Q10.

Last month I highlighted a recent publication Correlates of health-related quality of life in women with severe facial blemishes under the title of `rosacea can make sufferers life miserable‘.

The paper has since been picked up by the Ohio State University news service where the author has added some high level comments.

Science Daily: Corrective Cosmetics May Not Boost Quality Of Life For Women With Severe Facial Blemishes

OSU Research News: Corrective cosmetics may not boost quality of life for women with severe facial blemishes

Using makeup to cover a severe facial blemish may not improve the quality of a woman’s life, a new study suggests. It did not matter how severe or what kind of blemish she had, whether it was a case of severe acne, a noticeable facial scar or pronounced dark spots covering the face.

“The women who used foundations to cover these kinds of marks reported having a lower health-related quality of life than did the women who didn’t wear the same kind of makeup,” said Rajesh Balkrishnan, the study’s lead author and the Merrell Dow professor of pharmacy at Ohio State University.
….
“The women who used foundation to cover blemishes may have had a tougher time psychologically dealing with their blemishes than did the women who didn’t use corrective makeup,” Balkrishnan said. “Although it’s difficult to say why this is, it may be that the women who didn’t wear makeup to cover their blemishes felt more confident in their appearance.”
….
Whether or not they wore makeup, participants overwhelmingly felt that without their blemish other people would see them in a less negative light, and that the overall quality of their lives would improve.

Interestingly, the researchers found no difference in health-related quality of life scores based on the type and size of a blemish. For example, a woman with bad acne did not feel any worse or any better than a woman with melasma.

But the more fearful a woman was of being negatively evaluated in public, the lower she rated her health-related quality of life.

Researchers aren’t certain exactly how severe blemishes affect a woman’s mental health, and a study like this one may help in designing better treatments, including corrective cosmetics, for women, Balkrishnan said.

The study was funded by a grant from Vichy Laboratoires, which makes DermaBlend, a line of corrective cosmetics. Vichy Laboratoires is owned by L’Oreal. Ann Bouloc, a study co-author and a scientist with Vichy , is the only researcher in this study with a financial link to Vichy.

Although it is not clear whether DermaBlend was the only product used in the study, it has been discussed on rosacea-support. A message posted to rosacea-support listed the ingredients of dermablend as ; Paraffinum liquidum, Cera alba, Talc, isopropyl palmitate, Magnesium carbonate, Carnauba, Propylparaben, Allantoin. May contain: Titanium dioxide – Iron oxides.
